Dialog Telekom Annual Report goes trilingual
Saturday, 6 May 2006 - 4:21 AM SL Time

Dialog Telekom, the largest company on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in terms of market capitalization, has launched its maiden Annual Report in the English, Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Presented and structured on the theme 'Enriching Sri Lankan Lives', the Annual Report of the country`s foremost mobile telecommunications company, has been designed to provide parity reach and information to all communities. While all shareholders received the English version of the annual report, they were also given the opportunity to request for an additional copy of the report in either Sinhala or Tamil.

Chief Executive of Dialog Telekom Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya said that 'Through our maiden Annual Report we have endeavored to set a high standard of disclosure and transparency in our operations, to our shareholders and the public at large.

The Dialog story belongs to Sri Lankans from across all regions and communities. As such it is only natural that the report has been made available in three languages thereby providing equal access to in-depth information on the company and its activities.'

The company has facilitated a simple process for obtaining a Sinhala or Tamil version of the Annual Report.

Enclosed with every English Language annual report is a return postage paid postcard enabling the recipient to request an additional copy in a language of his or her choice. The shareholder simply places a check mark next to the preferred language, and mails the postcard to Dialog Telekom. All postage charges are borne by the company.

The shareholder will receive the requested annual report prior to the Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for the 19th of May.

Highlights of the annual report include an extensive section on the company`s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives encompassing the company`s commitment to Environmental, Economic and Social performance.

The report also provides an extensive account of the company`s code of Corporate Governance, which has been designed in keeping with global best practices.

A comprehensive account of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) practices adopted by the company is also featured within the annual report.

The company`s ERM focus is recognized as being critical to the company`s ability to 'capitalize on business opportunities and to negate unexpected outcomes'.

Dialog Telekom operates Dialog GSM, the country`s largest mobile telecommunications network. Dialog is a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia International, which is wholly owned by Telekom Malaysia BhD. Dialog Telekom is the largest company in terms of Market capitalization on the Colombo Stock Exchange and accounts for over 60% of the local mobile telecommunication market, with a subscriber base in excess of 2.3million Sri Lankans.

I believe all government departments and private sector organizations should have staff who can help tamil speaking people in sri lanka.
Bus conductors must also speak tamil.

Learning/using implementing things in Tamil makes economic sense because of close proximity to south India with a Tamil population of over 60 million. This is the key for survival in next phase of economic growth. Progressive companies such as Dialog will do well in the future.

Congratulation to the company! for taking the business to the ordinary man and encouraging them to invest in shares.
This is the first time I see an annual report in a language other than English

You might already know that almost all Tamils in South India learn English as their main language and Tamil as their 2nd language. Though they have limited knowledge in Tamil when it comes to technical document such as Annual report they would prefer to read in English.
Also, in S India religion is not taught as a subject instead they are taught ethics.
These, I think are great forward thinking ideas.
