UNICEF asks Tigers to release children
Tuesday, 18 April 2006 - 3:11 AM SL Time

The LTTE, which is coming under increasing international pressure over its violence in the North and the East in the run up to the second round of truce talks in Geneva, has drawn flak from a UN agency for endangering the lives of children within its fighting units.

Following the killing of an LTTE child soldier, in a mine explosion in the North, on the eve of the Sinhala-Tamil New Year, UNICEF has condemned the outfit`s child conscription, which has jeopardised the lives of many children and called for immediate release of all child combatants.

UNICEF has on several occasions called upon the LTTE to stop recruiting child soldiers but in vain. It also embarked on a transit home project to help rehabilitate child combatants but it proved to be a non-starter as the LTTE didn`t honour its pledge to release children.

The UN has placed the LTTE on its `List of Shame` together with a number of other terror groups including the Lord`s Resistance Army of Uganda, for abducting children and turning them into killers.

The full text of the UNICE statement:

`UNICEF deeply regrets the death of a 17 year-old child in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) auxiliary killed on13 April in a reported claymore mine incident in North Vavuniya. This incident underlines the risks children are exposed to when used in direct combat or in support roles such as delivery of supplies. Recruitment of children is a direct violation of their right to protection from violence. UNICEF calls on the LTTE to immediately release all under-age recruits within its ranks and to cease recruitment of children. UNICEF conveys its condolences to the family for their loss.`

Once in a while a recylcled article from UNICEF. have dealt with this many times.

lets have a look at what the Brit Army has for minimum age. ofcourse with the allegiance to the superpower they are beyond the law but just for the sake or argument here is the site.

http://www.armyjobs.mod.uk/RegularArmy/Requirements/Age/Soldier/

Normally, you must be between 16 and 30 years old on the day of enlisting into the Army.

If you are under the age of 18, you?ll need the consent of your parents or guardians.

Readers / TC

Lip service by the Sri Lankans everywhere are not enough.

Even Tamilcanuk, an ardent LTTE mad dogs supporter on this forum, says that every Sri Lankan is an ambassador representing Sri Lanka.

More and more complaints through mail and email should reach UN, written in all three languages, with copies flagged to IC.

These compalints have worked remarkably well to get LTTE mad dogs release a quite a number of child soldiers...but still the abductions, rapes and force recruitment goes on.
That should be stopped!

Eye-opening article.

It is extremely saddening to hear that children join the army. However its not uncommon during war period for under-aged children to join the army. I am sure sometimes their parents and recruiting officers keep an blind eye on recruits age. There had been hundreds of cases during WW2. eg: one I found on quick search. http://tinyurl.com/oc9xl

I think LTTE should adopt more robust vetting process on their recruits.

UNICEF needs to get involved and first realise the Truth about child-recruitment by Sri Lankans and not just Tamils. Then they must express their findings in a language that all Sri Lankans would relate to. Right now UNICEF is expressing knowledge without realising at least a small part of that knowledge. There is lack of ownership in their statements. What a waste of International Resources

Tharsini,

UNICEF get a life, ask the government to act with responsible.

Wow.. look who is talking...

Even UN is no match for LTTE ambitions.

No effort should be spared to get these kids released, rehabiliated and released to schools.

Thank you GOSL and UNICEF in getting together and addressing this humanitarian issue.

But more remian to be done.
