I joined Govt in country`s interest says Mahinda Samarasinghe

KARANDENIYA: `After President Mahinda Rajapaksa was elected to office, he invited me to join the Government.
I was the Chief Opposition Whip at the time but I had always advocated unity among all political parties in the interest of the country and I accepted President`s invitation,` said Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe addressing a ceremony held at Karandeniya after opening new market complex costing Rs. 20 million and laying the foundation stone for a branch of People`s Bank at Karandeniya.
Minister Samarasinghe said that he was also the Chairman of the Select Committee of Parliament on Disaster Management while holding the Post of Chief Opposition Whip. President Mahinda Rajapaksa created history in this country when he established for the first time a Ministry of Human Rights, a suggestion he made to the President.
He said the President had also been a human rights activist and as a Minister he pursued a policy of preserving human rights. The Government had a wide programme of work to do and took into account the diversity among the people and political parties.
But it was more important for various groups and political parties to get together and unite to develop the country and achieve peace and prosperity for all citizens of the country, he said. The Minister of Regional Development Gunaratna Weerakoon presided over the ceremony.
