The government has decided to grant a general amnesty to several thousand foreigners, who have overstayed their visas, some for long periods, Controller of Immigration and Emigration P. Bandula Abeykoon said yesterday (3).
The amnesty is to come into effect from the beginning of May.
When asked whether President Mahinda Rajapakse would be giving the amnesty as requested by certain Foreign Diplomatic Missions, he said Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake who is also the Minister of Internal Administration had directed Ministry Secretary Dr.Vidanapathirana to take action according to the decision made by the President.
Abeykoon said those foreigners who do not avail themselves of the amnesty in May 2006 will be arrested and immediately deported.
Already there are several thousand foreigners who have been arrested under the Immigration Laws for overstaying their visas. They are being detained at the Mirihana detention camp.
He said there were a number of foreigners employed or doing business here although their visas had expired. There were also some others who were believed be engaged in activities detrimental to national interests.
The government has had to take the decision to deport foreigners overstaying their visa periods due to such persons, he said.

ANU D - You are right.
Tamilcanuck - Don't talk shop. Try obtaining a visa from
SL to visit HK ? The hassle to convince
them to issue & with a valid visa on SL P/P
try visiting HK ? Let it be any ethnicity
experience the scrutiny by HK Immigration?
Just last week an eminent retired tamil
Doctor was detained for (03) hours & with
much argument by those accompanying him that
he was given a limited a (04) day visa. This
doc is back in SL. He happen to go there to
witness the HK 7's only ? Whats the fuss?
SEND THE BOYS TEACH THEM A LESSON ?
DEFEND the TAMIL PEOPLES RIGHTS?
you are fortunate, we all holders of SL P/P
are being discriminated.
Why are we fighting ? To be rediculed by
others ??????????????????????????
KWIKANGA - Let they be anybody
Yes it is a good one off thing.
At this point of time, follow the Hong Kong example :
1. HK was a visa free entry port for Sri Lankans.
2. This facility was said to have been abused & now they
have strict visa regulations for Sri lankans.
Thats fine.
As HK did, Sri Lanka must follow:
1. Which nationals are mainly the abusers of GOSL visa
free or on arrival visa facility abusers?
2. Impose such nationals of those countries stringent
requirements to obtain visa to enter SL from the
the Consulates of SL fron the country of origin
Let SL missions earn an income too.
3. It is the legitimate right of the GOSL to round up &
detain visa abusers with no bail & send them back.
4. Anybody found working or engaged in any form of work
for money or otherwise must be prosecuted & blacklisted
for breach of condition of stay & deported
5. Those who have only over stayed their visas must
be debarred from entering SL for (02) years
Tough scrutiny : This is what the SL Immigration must conduct when Nationals of countries that had abused free and liberal visa facility enter SL, in future.
The SL Immigration has a huge responsibility & should not be asked to provide any reasons for their actions but merely state for security reasons & proceedure as resorted to by HK Immigration............................... |

The Indian Government has given permission for those Indian residents overseas to freely apply for duel citizenship without any additional fees. But the Sri lankan Government levies large sum of money for those Sri Lakan residents overseas to apply for duel citizenship.
The Sri Lankan Government also encourages on foreign money to flow into the country. Why cannot the Government impose a small sum for the overseas Sri Lankan residents to obtain duel citizenship.

AnuD - No.
Sellam: This subject has nothing to do with dual citizenship. It is about abusing the visa previlage to enter & remain in the country as a visitor |
