The Excise Department conducted raids on 16 incidents of transportation and sale of liquor during the past three days in areas where the government banned sale of alcohol where the Local Government Election was to be held.
The Bureau of Special Operations (BSO) of the Excise Department took two trishaws into custody along with the drivers for transporting 70 bottles of arrack which were said to be distributed in Colombo suburbs.
Eleven illicit liquor raids were carried out in the areas of Gangodawila, Attanagalle, Gampaha, Kadawatha, Boralesgamuwa and Angoda, which resulted in the seizure of kasippu.
The BSO OIC, Inspector Prabath Jayawickreme told the `Daily Mirror` that the Excise department had banned the sale of liquor on a three day period from March 29 to 31, in areas where the election was held.
The arrested suspects were produced in courts while the recovered kasippu was confiscated.
The Excise Department team was led by Inspector K R Wijesinghe, while Sergeant Udaya (113), Corporal Dias (566), Excise Guards Rohan (796), Herath (837), Dammika (901) and Mayura (963) carried out the raids.

| Sri Lankan government should reduce tax on locally made liquor and encourage export. This is one way to stop illegal liquor distillation too. |

Freelancer,
'Sri Lankan government should reduce tax on locally made liquor and encourage export'.
I don't think this is possible. The tax money from alcohol is one of the major routes for the GOSL. Reducing would therefore be not a choice. |
