The first-ever children`s radio channel
Tuesday, 28 March 2006 - 11:59 PM SL Time

The first-ever children`s radio channel, Vidula, has been launched. The launching ceremony was held at Temple Trees on Tuesday morning under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Declaring open the new service, the president said the channel could render a huge service to create innovative future generation in the country.

The president also stated that it is the responsibility of elders to bring about a new world to children.

In this venture, the Vidula radio channel could play a vital role. He stated that every child should be given the opportunity to bring out their skills through this channel.

President Rajapakse emphasized that the children in the north and east should also be given equal opportunity to display their talents.

The president was in the view that this channel is invaluable, comparing to certain media institutions that act irresponsibly.

Chairman of the SLBC, Sunil Sarath Perera said that radio is a powerful medium to reach villages in the country.

The new channel, he said would open up avenues to bring about harmony among different communities and also to promote cultural identity.

Meanwhile, the promotional programme of Vidula, which commenced last 15th from Anuradhapura reached the SLBC premises on Monday.

A special message carried by schoolchildren was handed over to the president this morning.

The SLBC has organized a children`s carnival coinciding with the launch of the channel.

Several entertainment events are included in the programme. The carnival is being held throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The SLBC invites all children to join the cement this event, for which admission is free.

The frequency of the Vidula channel is 102.6 FM.

This is a good effort by the GOSL to bring out the best from and for the kids. Songs, stories, health, science, literature, history and maths can be taught as a part of teaching the kids in a interesting way. Let the kids start their saying be heard for adults too.

This is a good idea but might not last long due to commercial reasons.

This is something we needed from long time back. I can remember when I was small I used to listen the children's programs, apart from the educational programs, 'Lihini Doowa' and 'Wewalak Nathi Pasalak' (featuring Jiljona and Vandabona) were my favorites. Still I can remember those things.........
This will allow children to think creatively, and independently. However, I doubt the next move of the private TV channels to grab the attention of kids away from the Radio Channel.
We appreciate President's moves to make the country a better place for everyone ,I hope the others will help him to keep his enthusiasm up. Even though there are flows in his administration, it seems he is 200 % better than CBK.

Ranil will have to work hard for the next presidential election...

Piyal,

Can you remember there was a time when late Premakeerthi De Alwis had a children's programme sponsored by National Lotteries Board? That was very good too.

I think the quality of the programme presentation is important too. Lets hope the commercialism does not squander the good opportunity of this Children's channel by any way.

This is a too bad place for adds.
This will also make SL-kids blind as in western countries.
This will also create heavy weight Colombo-ens.

Tck,

'folks are obsessed with the Koti.'

Sometimes not only 'Koti' but 'Ali' as well.

There was this tag 'Ali-Koti' givisuma (treaty) a propaganda by the MR politicos to oust the RW out of the hardcore Sinhalese votes in the South. It seemed worked last Nov 17th.

This is the biggest load of bull I've heard in a long while. Why don't the children be thought lying, cheating, humbuggery, hoodwinking....., from a small age, so they can be expert at it and able to practice without getting caught when they are adults? What is the use of keeping children in a state of 'innocence' up to certain age? Teach them something useful, something that can take them to the highest office in the land and earn everyone's respect.

Who respects, Songs, stories, health, science, literature, history and maths? The people who have followed these paths are spat on, pissed on, walked on, puked on ......

Tell a child an adult's story.

Everyone always want to teach the children, start with the adults first.
