Justice and Constitutional Affairs Deputy Minister Dilan Perara is the first in a series of prominent decision makers, public officials, and political analysts to interact with puppet characters on key issues facing Sri Lanka in a new television series supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Embassy in Colombo said yesterday.
The program, titled Janathalaya, makes its debut tonight at 9.10 p.m., immediately following the English news on the Teleshan Network Limited (TNL). It features eight fictional characters represented by silicon puppets who inhabit a set designed as a Post Office. The puppet cast represents a socio-politically diverse cross-section of Sri Lanka, and contributes varied perspectives into a weekly discussion of prominent political issues.
The public also participates in the program by submitting discussion topics and expressing opinions through letters collected in an on-set Post Box. The program`s producers develop these ideas into dialogue between the puppets and weekly guests, who include politicians, policy makers, pundits, and specialists in human rights, law, education, diplomacy, gender, and religion. The producers and dubbing artistes all have a wide range of experience in political history and law as well as media presentation. Through editing, the puppets appear in place of interviewers when the program is aired.
`For thousands of years and in countless cultures people have brought important issues to the public through the use of puppets,` USAID Mission Director Dr. Carol Becker said. `Discussing these ideas in this context puts guests at ease and fosters frank and candid exchange that will help educate thousands of Sri Lankans about topics crucial to resolving the country`s conflict.`
Janathalaya is scheduled for an initial run of 26 episodes on TNL. The show is produced by the Multi-Diversity Community (MDC) headed by popular television personality Vasantha Moragoda.

In SL there is no need for Puppets to analyze the politics.
The politicians and news media all are puppets of political fringe. |

This is perhaps something new in Sri Lanka.
In many countries of the world, there are shows like this and no politician gets angry for taking him 'on stage'.
Hope the Sri Lankan justice will not poke its fingers into this hilarious program.
Its amusing. Its funny. Everybody will enjoy watching it!! Edited By - nandalal - 22 Mar 2006 22:04:33 GMT |

Nandalal,
This must be similar to the Spitting Image in the UK.
Can you remember there was a local on TV sometime ago I have seen by the name 'Anibal Akka'? Not sure whether this is in the same group of satirirical stuff. |

Dilan is the biggest puppet in the Parliament.. So it will be yet another 'Muppet Show'
He came from nowhere on the coffin of Nalanda Ellawala, and has been a puppet of CBK.
We would be very grateful if Mr. Brown can post the clip on the web site. |

Justman some time back we had a puppet show, satirisng politicians.
The Annibal Akka character Dr. Akai mentioned was from that programme. The chracter represented CBK. It was very very popular. Ranil was Amden.
Sinhala terms such as 'haney meyala' were popularised by this series. I cannot recall its name but all politicians and Prabhakaran were not spared.
TNL suddenly dropped the show due to some internal bickering. |
