Navy seizes vessel suspected of carrying weapons to Tamil Tiger rebels
Wednesday, 22 March 2006 - 8:53 PM SL Time

Sri Lanka`s navy on Wednesday seized a fishing boat suspected of smuggling explosives to the Tamil Tiger rebels and detained five ethnic Tamils, a day after an exchange of fire between the rebels and the navy.

The boat was intercepted off the coast of the Jaffna Peninsula, 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of the capital, Colombo, said military spokesman Brig. Sudhir Samarasinghe.

The navy confiscated 20 gelignite sticks and took five ethnic Tamils into custody, he said. Gelignite is a type of dynamite used mostly in the construction and mining industries, but can also be used to blow up bridges and other structures.

`The navy suspects that the boat was being used by the LTTE to transport their arms and explosives,` said Samarasinghe, using the abbreviation for the rebels` formal name - Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Another naval official, who declined to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media, said LTTE members were among those arrested.

Also Wednesday, suspected rebels fired at an army check point in Jaffna and fled when soldiers retaliated, Samarasinghe said. There were no casualties.

The incidents came a day after the rebels` naval wing, the Sea Tigers, exchanged fire with a navy vessel near the strategic port of Trincomalee in the northeast. The navy suffered no casualties, Samarasinghe said, adding that he didn`t know whether any rebels were killed or injured.

A 2002 Norway-brokered cease-fire has come under serious strain due to spiraling violence between the two sides, prompting European truce monitors to express fears that the country was again on the verge of sliding back into civil war.

The Tamil Tigers have been campaigning for a separate homeland for the island`s ethnic minority Tamils since 1983, accusing the majority Sinhalese of discrimination.

The two sides held six rounds of peace talks after signing the cease-fire but talks broke down in 2003.

At least 160 people - including at least 81 government security personnel - have been killed in the Tamil-majority northeast since December.

The government has blamed the Tigers for the violence, while the rebels have accused the government of using pro-government militias to attack them. Both sides deny attacking the other.

The rebels and government officials pledged at talks last month in Geneva to quell the violence and adhere to the cease-fire agreement. They plan to meet again on April 19-20.

Why the GOSL navy interfere these poor fishermen?
Can they do the same to south?

This is what called sinhala racism, they want tamil fishermen starve to death because SL butchers cannot kill them directly as CFA making kinda inconvenient, now finding an alternative way of continue killings.

You two dudes may haven't heard something called law. That thing called law prohibits civillians to posses explosives. And using explosives for fishing is banned in Sri Lanka too. That same thing gives authority to the state's armed forces and police to arrest those who break the law. Before crying out loud for justice (when there is no unjustice happened)and before accusing the ones who are helping to keep the law and order, you should know these little things. Have a nice day dude:)

It's the reality, Tamils search to have guns, as the Sinhalases.

But there is a hughe difference , Tamil do not dominate and oppress the people, while Sinhaleses are dominating Tamils using wespons and soldiers.

IF NOBODY TRUST ME , PLEASE MAKE A TRIP IN N-E, MOSTLY IN JAFFNA, WHERE GOSL SENT THE ENTIRE ARMY TO DOMINATE THE MINORITIES.

And after some uneducated people accuse Tamil to be terrorist !!

LTTE 'terrorism' is nothing against GOSL and SLA OPPRESSION !!

I know what i'm talking about !!

I wonder why should we press LTTE for negotiations while they cant be trust-worthy !

if they can be trust-worthy, yes Negotiations should go, no doubt about that !

but have they been Trust-Worthy ? No NEVER

why would talk then ? for what , we should negotiate any more ?

'The navy suspects that the boat was being used by the LTTE to transport their arms and explosives,' said Samarasinghe....

Nice one Mr.Brigadier!
LTTE really needs to 'Smuggle' 20 gelignite sticks. They are SOOOOO unavailable they need to send FIVE Tamils (ethnic Tamils that is!) to safe guard it! Mr.Brigadier, they are NOT available in NE like MBRLs or 120mms, a very RARE commodity!!
What a Catch by the Navy! Bravo! This Brig. guy needs bravery Madel! Mahinda here we recommend one for this guy. Mr.Brigadier don't worry you will get one if you play the correct political cards. Most probably when MR is leaving the office! If you want to improve your chances try to catch 200 gelignite sticks and 50 Tamils (ethnic variety)!!
BTW, what happened to the fishermen's catch (fish/prawns)?
Did you send them to your Col. underworld contact who runs an fish wholesale business? Be careful these underworld gangs may be run by LTTE (ethnic Tamils that is!). You may end up like Muthalief or other INTELLIGENCE people who used to catch 20 or 30 gelignite sticks to become TOP guys in the military ladder!!

Yup Kural,
LTTE is not born from Sky, it's from the dirt... you are correct.
That's why it has double standards,..everytime...
in one hand you have the pigeon, on the other,... Dynamite...
Keep going LTTE,.. When the beginning of the end comes... no one will be able to rescue.. Not the Pro_LTTE members of this forum either......

Ragu,
LTTE smuggle whatever they can,..no matter what, even a cigarette butt.
How do you justify smuggling 40 Laser night vision equipments on returning from 'Piece Talks' ??
Is that for Thamilchelvam's son to play hide and seek with his buddies at night ???
