In all fairness lets compare with other countries.
By all means do so. But to me personally, comparative/relative examinations are useless. It's akin to saying SL is better than Somalia. Does that mean SL has no problems? Or that everyone should accept the status quo and be happy?
When a model is offered as the ideal or as the standard by which others should be judged, it's of even greater importance to examine that model in isolation. Me thinks.
Like I've said before, human nature bores me to death as it's so predictable. I do not judge people by what they do when they are nice and comfortable, true nature comes out mainly in adverse situations. I don't think Americans would behave any differently from any other - Abu Graib is just one example of many. As much as it makes them feel good to project themselves as such, I for one, don't believe that they are a special breed.
Can the 'civility' of a group of people, in 'ease of life' achieved through plunder be used as a basis to judge other groups of people?
Like I've written before, I have more respect for the 'human qualities' of an older group of Lankans I stumbled onto, that had not been exposed to any education or religion. A group who had to come up with their own 'set of morals/rules to live by.'
There is a lot of seductive 'background noise' of the 'moral superiority' of America in the American college circuit, but like all seductions the thrill is only fleeting, until reality dawns. 'Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.'

Yes and no. In a way it proves that even in this day and age fascism can raise it's head in the 'ideal society,' supported to the hilt by the legislature and mass media. If one didn't live through it, it would have been difficult to imagine that it ever happened. It's failure has more to do with the sheer incompetence and idiocy of GWB & Co than any other innate safeguards in the 'system.' Also, most periods of fascism has limited shelf-life.
Having said all that, don't for a moment think I hate America, only thing, I try not to get duped. I love it to death for different reasons, the decadence suits my own heart to a T, and the gals are pure as the freshly fallen snow, can get them to believe almost anything. Now what more would a good ole' lothario wish for?

True in theory, as long as you depend on America/EU for Aid, you have to dance to their tune, I also don't know any country that's perfect, me think. I am not glorifying US to me they are not a special breed either, I don't think most americans do think that way at all, and me personally do not like generalizing. As a woman I am grateful to the freedom that I have here to be the person i want to be, in return to make a difference in someone else's life.
The whole GWB & Co put a bad taste in everyone's mouth about the US, but we live in the millenium, people are smarter to make their own judgment, unless ofcourse you are an american gal, and gullible like me :))
