Hey GeeBees,
It is a wonderful idea for President Ahmadinejad to be invited as a guest speaker at Columbia University. do you think as a good host he shouldn't have been criticized, or would you think it's a way of showing freedom of speech.
Now you put me on the spot. I'd rather speak about gals, dogs, old amps, Bevis, Penn's old b'friends or just about anything else other than politics and human nature. Human nature is so predictable it bores me to death. The Only thing that is not predictable is the new ways people find to get deceived by the same old things that they should see coming from miles away.
Lest you think I am some kind of a leftist do-gooder and since you were not there in our political discussions in the good old past, first I should state where I stand. I am not the greatest admirer of the human race. I am only interested in my own and my family's survival, and to be honest I care very little about others. I am also totally amoral and will sell my grandmother for a buck, as I appreciate the freedom (especially having come from a SL setting controlled by uneducated two-bit politicians) that wealth (outside of SL) brings - not the conspicuous consumption part, though. Although I am a dirty capitalist, in many instances I find myself in agreement with socialists/Marxists like Vimukthi as I feel their analysis of the problems - not necessarily the solutions - is closer to the truth. Although I am not in total agreement with some, I also mostly agree with Noam Chomsky's points of criticism of the US. So, like I've said before, for me truth is truth, it doesn't depend on my condition/situation, ideology, or some pet paranoia/peeve. Now that's out of the way,
It is a wonderful idea for President Ahmadinejad to be invited as a guest speaker at Columbia University.
To be honest, in the larger scheme of things, to most of humanity that is just trying to survive from day to day, I don't think that an invitation from a two-bit university in a God forsaken country matters that much. It gives a chance for ignorant nincompoops to jump up and down with token protests or support, just to alleviate a little of their frustrations and guilt. The whole hypocrisy is just nauseating. On the other hand President Ahmadinejad is just trying to smooth-talk and buy some time till Iran gets it's hands on a nuke.
do you think as a good host he shouldn't have been criticized, or would you think it's a way of showing freedom of speech.
Geeze GG.... Freedom of speech? Are you kidding? You have lived in America long enough to know, try how far free-speech will get you. This may come as a shock to you but let me tell you there is no true free-speech in America, not in the mainstream media. People just go through the motions but always end up saying what is safe and what people want to hear - even Noam Chomsky up to a point. I see people self-censoring to the extent that makes me want to puke. See how far Michael Moore will get if he doesn't cloak his criticisms with pseudo-patriotism. It's all play-acting, baby. This needs a little more time than I have right now, of course we can debate/argue later.
From where I am sitting human beings are very primitive animals with highly sophisticated 'systems of self-delusion' that make them believe they are 'civilized' because it makes them feel good. That's all. Just because they wear nice suits and dine on fine cuisine and drink fine wine and talk sophisticated jargon and play the piano, do you in your wildest dreams believe that GWB, Chaney, Rice et al are civilised after what they did to the Iraqis without even batting an eyelid?
Do you really believe President Ahmadinejad wants to lay a wreath on ground zero? He and most Iranians and Arabs would rather piss on it.
For all our delusions of 'civilization' - advancement or whatever you want to call it - what's in operation is the survival of the fittest in it's crudest form which people camouflage with the symbols of civilization. Tell me why, when Iraq is sitting on the second largest known reserves of oil, an Iraqi has to beg an American for a job in his own country that pays him less than $2 a day?
The bottom line right now is that, America is the greatest threat to the world - I agree with Chomsky here - and all the other countries are in a mad rush to acquire nukes because they know that's the only way to prevent America from attacking. They wouldn't dare attack North Korea, guess why?
Anyway what God given right has America and Israel got, to stockpile nukes and dictate to others not to?
May be now, it's the dawn of the Chinese era and water-torture will be back in vogue, it'll be a welcome change from the torture of having to listen to GWB et al and 'this great country of ours' everyday. But humans will always be human, so I'll just chase skirts and live till the day I die. What else is there to do?

Allo
Thank you for taking your time away from your favorite pastime topics.
Freedom of speech?
Agreed, there is no 'true' freedom of speech in the US, I saw that first hand after after 9/11, how media was told to watch what they say and do, and some journalists were fired around the same time criticizing Bush. One could argue in the name of permanent war against terrorism government willingness to permanently suspend constitutional freedoms. In all fairness lets compare with other countries.
GWB, Chaney, Rice et al are civilised
Agree with you there, I also believe we do not live in a 'fascist' country, even if we are governed by people with fascist character traits, and lust for fascism. There is a difference. Have you seen the movie 'The Lives of others' check it out for a glimpse into the reality of fascism.

Agreed with you there, Saddam?s ouster was economically motivated.
On lighter side, yes there is no topless sun bathing allowed at American beaches unlike in europe.
