This thread is peaceful except for little turbulence caused by HGB and Bonggo's Tango
Don't think me unkind
Words are hard to find
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through

GG,
however I think the U.S. economy is still strong and very competitive, depite the trade deficit. some might argue deficit numbers are not a sign of strength.
These things are very difficult to predict, one can only play the devil's advocate. The advantage America has is, China, Japan and others have chosen to reinvest their reserves back in US bonds and securities. It's like holding the tiger's tail, they cant let go without getting eaten up by the consequences. It' like Japan and China giving the bulk of their manufactured goods on credit and expecting payment later. I may be wrong but feel, the way the Americans will come out of this mess, is through inflation. The Fed stopping the publication of financial data (M1, M2, M3 etc) is an ominous sign.

Look at the new consumer goods, new methods of production, new markets, new forms of industrial organization in the US. Have you heard of 'creative destruction' ?
America is a strange place, now people have forgotten and you may find it difficult to believe, when I first came (1979,) for the Americans, who were on a severe economic down turn, the heroes were the Japanese. American CEOs were going to Japan to learn Japanese management techniques! Workers were doing Japanese style of calisthenics in the factories each morning! The whole bloody talk was about how great the Japanese were. Like the good ole' Millennium Bug, now no one remembers. If there is a buck to be made America will catch any passing fad. About Hollywood, Marlon Brando said, that if they think you can make them money, they'll let you siht on their carpet and thank you for it. That's America in a nutshell. It suits me to a T!
I wonder if you have seen a TV movie called 'Billionaire Boys Club?' It's about a group of young boys who wanted to live the American dream and ended up murdering some people. A very good true story. In it the leading character (brilliantly portrayed by Judd Nelson) practices what is called 'paradox thinking' where you shift your normally accepted boundaries of moral limits. One interesting thing he says to another guy is, 'don't ever lie if you don't know the truth, because the person you are lying to might know the truth.' In America I've seen so much hogwash passed on as truth, make no mistake, I also participate in it if there is a buck to be made, but while doing it I also try to keep track of the truth as not to get easily scukered in by the whole claptrap.
Have you heard of 'creative destruction' ? The US has harnesses this process (destroying the old one, creating the new one)
history ain't what it used to be.
In the hight of the internet boom there was this TV program where many super duper fast talkers were saying that this time it's different, you cant apply the same old type of analysis to these new companies, one must come up with modern techniques! And a few old timers who had seen it all before were saying, Yeah, a scuker is born every minute.
Let me ask you a q... which country in the world give you more opportunities to pursue your dreams through hardwork, courage to acheive prosperity.
If you travel around the world you'll see there are many countries with great opportunities, all you need is stable governments and democracy. I have met many Lankans who have done very well in many parts of the world with their own efforts. But it's true, many Lankans think that the US is the place to be. But how many are actually living the dream? Or are many people living in a dream thinking about living the dream? I suppose, Hurricane Katrina was a good eye-opener.
Just like anything made in china, breakable.
This may have been true some time ago, but I bought some Chinese tube amps, and I would say the quality is much better than an equally priced American amp. In fact it was a shock. Design-wise they may have a little more to go, but are catching up fast.
It's not the brand I bought, but have heard that these guy's production quality is top notch. Take a look.

Hey HGB
We all have our own opinion, and it's interesting to know yours on US global Economy, we all do concern about the inflation etc. Housing market, household debts have been taking a toll on US economy, but some groups predict it'll all bounce the back next quarter who knows.
Thought you might be interested in reading this article.

Billionaire's Boys Club
Joe Hunt sounds creepy and twisted! I heard Menendez brothers watched that movie before they killed their parents.
Paradox Thinking
Have you heard of the children cartoon 'Spongebob Square Pants' ? I got hooked on when I used to baby sit my god son.
As per SBSP ' You mean to say they've taken what we thought we think and made us think we thought our thoughts we've been thinking out thoughts we think we thought....you think? ' that's my theory on paradox thinking :)
made in China
I must say, as much as I am not a fan of made in china products, I embrace their philosophies, ying - yang and the fengshui!
Hurricane Katrina
Agreed, how it was handled. we also know how other countries handled migrants, and ban wearing weil etc. The list can be long from both sides, unless we move to Gilligan's Island which is actually not far from here:) I would love to live in europe which is more cultural than US. However, people I have met moved from other countries such as europe or Latin America find US is easier to live and can make your dreams come true, whether material prosperity or simply living a simple, full filling life. Don't forget America is made out of immigrants. Ofcourse, nothing is going to fall onto your lap free.

HGGB,
Globalisation is not as interesting to note as neighbourisation:
Teacher: Do you know the importance of a period?
Kid: Yeah, once my sister said she has missed one, my mom fainted, dad got a heart attack & our driver ran away.
**********************
A women asks the man who is traveling with six children, 'Are all these kids yours??'
The man replies, ' No, I work in a condom factory and these are customer complaints'.
**********************
A young boy asks his Dad, 'What is the difference between confident and confidential?'
Dad says, 'You are my son, I'm confident about that. Your friend over there, is also my son, that's confidential.

Bongs,

Lol... great!
Here's one I got recently.
A woman has an affair during the day while her husband is at work.
-- -
-- -Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees
-- -them and hides in the bedroom closet.
-- -
-- -Later, the woman's husband comes home. She hears
-- -him pull up, so she puts
-- -her lover in the closet - not realizing that the
-- -little boy is in there already.
-- -
-- -The little boy says, 'Dark in here.'
-- -
-- -The man says, 'Yes, it is.'
-- -
-- -Boy - 'I have a baseball.'
-- -
-- -Man - 'That's nice.'
-- -
-- -Boy - 'Want to buy it?'
-- -
-- -Man - 'No, thanks.'
-- -
-- -Boy - 'My dad's outside.'
-- -
-- -Man - 'OK, how much?'
-- -
-- -Boy - '$150'
-- -
-- -Man - 'Sold.'
-- -
-- -In the next few weeks, it happens again that the
-- -boy and the lover are both in the closet together.
-- -
-- -Boy - 'Dark in here.'
-- -
-- -Man - 'Yes, it is.'
-- -
-- -Boy - 'I have a Wilson infielder's glove.'
-- -
-- -The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy,
-- -'How much?'
-- -
-- -Boy - '$350'
-- -
-- -Man - 'Highway robbery. Sold.'
-- -
-- -A few days later, the father says to the boy:
-- -'Grab your glove and baseball and let's go outside and have a game of
-- -catch.'
-- -
-- -The boy says, 'I can't, I sold my ball and my glove.'
-- -
-- -The father asks, 'What? How much did you sell them for?'
-- -
-- -The boy says, '$500'
-- -
-- -The father says, 'That's terrible to overcharge
-- -your friends like that... that is way more than those two things
-- cost, or
-- -are worth.
-- -I'm going to take you to church and make you confess your greed.'
-- -
-- -They go to the church and the father makes the
-- -little boy sit in the confession booth and he closes the door.
-- -
-- -The boy says, 'Dark in here.'
-- -
-- -The priest says, 'Don't start that siht again,
-- -you're in my closet now . '
