Here is something to remember our good(?) old T-60
A blonde guy gets home early from work and hears strange noises coming from the bedroom. He rushes upstairs to find his wife naked on the bed, sweating and panting. 'What's up?' he says. 'I'm having a heart attack,' cries the woman.
He rushes downstairs to grab the phone, but just as he's dialing, his 4-year-old son comes up and says,'Daddy! Daddy! Uncle Ted's hiding in your closet and he's got no clothes on!'
The guy slams the phone down and storms upstairs into the bedroom, past his screaming wife, and rips open the wardrobe door.
Sure enough, there is his brother, totally naked, cowering on the closetfloor.
You rotten ba$tard, 'says the husband,'my wife's having a heart attack and you're running around naked scaring the kids! |

Maitreya,
Thanks for educating me with all the audio stuff
My pleasure, it's something I enjoy talking about. As much as I like calling Penn and GG nasty names day in day out, somedays it's a welcome change to put in my two cents worth about audio.
To me it sounds alright.
That's the ultimate goal of this hobby. 'Good sound' is a very personal thing. Like someone said, build your system for yourself not the critics.
It's a journey of self-discovery, you learn about audio equipment as well as about yourself; what you like and don't like. Initially you tend to like things that give an impressive sound; one that impresses your friends and visitors - usually one that gives strong bass and treble - then you discover there is a lot more to it than just that.
is it good idea to use sub when listening music?
As above, this is a matter of personal choice, if you like it, don't worry if anyone else likes it or not. But few things about subs. They claim that there is little stereo information below 100Hz, so the two channels are combined and played through one sub. I suppose the primary reason for this approach is to save money as most subs are self-powered you'd require another amp and a woofer if the two channels are kept separate.
I suppose this is an area that ML as an authority on and a builder of speakers can elaborate on more than I. I have forgotten it now, but there is a correlation between the diameter of the woofer and the wave-length that it can generate. So in other words to generate the wave-length of a 20Hz (which is supposed to be the lower threshold of human hearing) sound wave the corresponding diameter of the woofer has to be quite large. I have rarely seen a sub with a woofer larger than 10 or 12 inches (in many cases smaller.) So what I suspect is that many so called subs are not real subs, that generate a linear response of bass frequencies down to 20Hz, but only gives a bass boost (similar to ramping up the bass control knob of an amp) somewhere just below 80Hz where most home speakers hit the -3db point of their lower end response.
In fact I have a vintage pair of 18 inch Goodmans woofers in SL that was given to me, I think it's from some theatre. I suppose those are big enough to generate a 20Hz sound wave.
I personally don't like breaking things up and putting them back again, things get complicated and not many people can put things back together properly (there is a whole heap of issues here like phase anomalies due to crossovers etc.) That's why there is a following for full-range speakers - a single speaker that can do most of the frequency-range.
I'll answer your question about the amp later when I have a little more time.
PS Check this, that's how large you got to go to produce bass in the really low region.

Maitreya,
is it good idea to use sub when listening music?
It all depends on your taste like old HGB said!!!
It depends on your main speakers as well....IF you are having a pair of floor standers capable of going somewhere around 50hz it would be sufficient for 'normal' listening.....then again 'normal' means different things to different people as I use a Tannoy sub with a 15' long throw driver for my normal listening as I am addicted to base whenever I am not listening to country or Amaradeva:):):)
There are some main speakers such as Nautilus that would cover the whole frequency range starting from around 10hz but they tend to be hefty and certainly are not spouse friendly......
If you are looking for a multi purpose small sub don't look beyond the sexy little Sunfires which are capable of literary shaking the floor!!!
Check this out....

If you are in to BIG base all the time, you ought to go for something such as REL, Velodyne or Paradigm behemoths which will kick the S'£$£t out of you as well as your neighbors!! |
