I watched the game; bloody rain was it for Aussies advantage?
thilagam anna,
in the shorter form of the game (20/20 or like today) the aussies have an advantage because the FIRST six batsmen in the lineup have a strike RATe of -90!! and if the overs are reduced they play hard. if they have top bat another 10 odd overs then they slow things down a bit. Thilagam Anna,
Piyal Malli
You were right about our boys not going to win the world cup, how could you be this pessimist? Next time I will not ask you.
I feel sorry for our boys; they came all the way to the finals.
I am an extreme optimist for the correct things. If I feel that I am going to get something, I try even 50+ times,. I have done that and achieved that.
I never doubted the abilities of Our Team, but I always knew this is gonna happen. I really admire the fight they gave and the 'closeness' of the game.
I have been a Sri Lankan Cricket fan ever since I started playing Cricket. But, in reality, we have to accept the truth.
I have to admit that Australians are the best team, even though I don't like that.
I am proud of our team, and I have no doubt about their abilities. I am sure If we batted first, we could have won.... |

Thilagam anna,
It is just one of those things. I am of course happy they reched the final and gave a good fight. They did not bow out in disgrace.
The match should not have been played yesterday. It was a farce to play 38 overs after the match was delayed by 3 hours. It was at the insistence of TV companies the teams were forced to play. Ridiculous. In the end selectros made blunders too.
When Sanath & Sangakkara were going great guns the bad news came from Colombo. Hardly anyone was interested in the game thereafter. The players should be commended for holding their heads high after the news broke through. |

| Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton are on the titanic. When it starts to sink Carter yells, 'Quick, save the women and children!' Nixon: 'Screw the women and children' Clinton: 'Do we have time?' |

Bonks,
What happened? I think the gods, elements, luck and Rooster Anna conspired against our boys, getting all those Brigetians to rain/piss on our parade. It's not like losing a properly fought battle, there's a bitter taste left. Edited By - hellogoodbye - 29 Apr 2007 13:16:34 G |

HGB,
Very very bitter taste.
The match was not held for the sake of the game but for the sake of TV companies.
Man fans have travelled from far and beyond, to see a super match, not in gloomy weather. I feel sorry for all the fans who filled the ground, especially the cricket mad Aussies who have travelled very very far. Surely man, they deserved something much better than this.
The match could have been played on the following day but it took place albeit with a reduced number of overs just to satisfy the requirements of those who purchased broadcasting right.
Real loser is the die-hard cricket fan. They were taken for a ride by the TV companies and ICC. |

Bonks,
I wont have any regrets if the Oz beat the bejesus out of us in a proper 50 over match, but this sort of never gave us a chance. As daunting as it was to go against Oz, what rotten luck that the conditions ended up favouring them. I think the weight of expectations from home was a bit too much on some of our young guys and they were strangely subdued throughout the match. I suppose we cant win them all. Anyway great effort to get to the final. |

Many think that winning the WC will reunite all the people in SL, but that's not the reality
Yes bhairav you are right, it certainly will not but it can be a stepping stone because it unites the nation when a game is on.
HGB
My friend, always nice to read your inputs :)) I do agree with them. However, great expectations did not put pressure on the guys, they are far too experienced for that.
I dunno, looking at the events that unfolded it is safe to assume it was simply not our day just as 1996 was not Australia's day.
Cricket is just a game but the powers that be must make use of it to do something positive, especially to promote cricket as a uniting factor, instead of focussing on making quick bucks. |
