Kumuthini and Penn,
Thanks for the info. I googled 'Koothu' and came up with this site on Tamilnadu dances:
http://travelmasti.com/domestic/tamilnadu/dances.htm
It turns out there is also a 'Snake' dance :)))
Penn its interesting to know that various styles within Bharatha Natyam were held in High or low regard.
Agree with you on the addition of the film styles into the dances.
Can't recall which rap video it is (American Artist) but there was one that had girls dressed and dancing in an imitation South Indian Style.
Except that all they were doing was shaking their hips and waving their hands so it was funny to watch!! |

Kumuthini,
I googled Arangetram too cos I did not know the meaning of the word. I figured it had something to do with coming of age or something like that :))
I came up with this site:
http://library.thinkquest.org/04oct/01260/arangetram.html
According to that, it takes a long time before the teacher is satisfied that the Sishya is ready. So the girl you mentioned must really be very talented or as you said her parents must have a lot of influence.
You can kind of see a similarity between this and martial arts, where the Master will only judge the student to be ready for the black belt when the student has undergone several years of rigourous training. |
