as i said earliar here is life from jaffna
Penn, Lula and others
I can relate to some of it (tuition, wrote a letter(a few of us signed it!!) to a gal and the letter found its way back to class coutesy of teacher who wasnt impressed at all!! but i spent my last 1.5 yrs in jaffna and let me bring you
some facts from the northern front.
the key to success is you basic bike. i think the model was asia
bike or Hero A bell is an important piece!!
college ends around 3:30 and you get home by 4ish. i was lucky enought to hang out with 5 others whose main interest were gals.
all 6 would start from the junction and make our way towards the gals houses. 1 was already hooked up. 2 others very advanced state, 1 early stage ( a bit later on about this dude) and me and the other guy giving company. the gals would know we would do this first run around 4:30ish and would be out watering the plants or whateever as long as they come out of the house. If for any reason they dont make it out we would make some sort of noise near the house and give a time for a second run. usually the second run was around 5:30ish.
remember talking with girls was VERY VERY difficult. at tuition they sat on one side with us on the other.
everything was done through a smile and eye movements .
girls rode bikes with their book carrier in the back with A book. we rode bikes (or Doubles with the pillion rider also pedalling, a JAffna ONLY phenomena i would think) with the book in our hand which was holding the handle bar. atleast one of us was armed with a comb JUST in case! a touch was unheard of. had to be satisfied with the occasional brush!
another guy was also interested in the girl the early stage guy mentioned above was interested in. we gave him a warning and then a physical sample as well basically saying the girl is taken.! ofcourse it was abit easy for us since we had ONE girl conquored so messages were being passed through her. they eventually hooked up only to break up a few yrs later.
the girl is now married to the other guy in question!! the other 3 mentioned are married to those girls and live here and we meet up.
the 5th guy never got a girl. as for me i was also in the process maybe of going after one but my parents had enough and took me out. that gal is in germany i'm told!
Let me relate a couple of incidents.
after late night tuition we come out to be confronted by some 'elders'. got roughed up a bit and did a fast withdrawl on two legs. this was after a few exchanges had taken place with elders finally clueing in why these bikes were coming into these parts of the village. another incident was we were following these girls (basically overtake them put a round get back and do it again) and we spotted the elders and took a detour to be put on the main road as an army convoy was moving!
i know we were scared of the soldiers but they were also scared of us. (those days the LTTE and other groups all used bikes). guns pointed and basically rounded up.
i could literally hear them breathe!!. well out pops my broken sinhala (It was much better 2 decades back) and bingo you can see their facial expressions change.
at chk points i always speak in sinhala and the SLA is always a bit more accomodating.
the incubation period before a girl finally clues in that a particular guy is after her is between 3-6 months.
yeah damn long. multiple runs are made with your name mentioned loudly near the gal who usually goes out with friends. i,e tuition remember is takes a awful lot of cycling, smiling, eye movements before things start to move! and all of this we have to do without 'elders' coming to know. the elders could be as much as 2+ yrs older than us. the bastards!
when my parents finally decided it was time to leave i cried. luckily execpt for 2 guys who live in eurpoe the rest of that gang is here. they were my classmates but not from the same school
priyanthy any of these methods sound familiar love the way women cycle. the legs pointing inn words and the occasional hand coming in to make sure the skirt doesnt lift! truly unforgettable time period! Edited By - tamilcanuck - 5 Nov 2006 13:43:44 GMT |
