I was the first drummer with Emeralds in in january 1970, whn I quit came Shanthi Seneviratne as my replace.
Shanthi was okay with them, however I was a drummer who ispired Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix and my expectations with the Emaralds would'nt last. Infact Emaralds wanted to play music did not suite my taste.
I wanted to change the whole of Emeralds way of performing according to then typ of music was widely expected and enjoyed by the music teens and music joiurnalists of that time.
Sam Sodhi a mtyp who could not change, because he went on on one minded track, he had no musical talent, all what he intented was to make money with all kind of crap music.
I am a rutin drummer who could read notes, none of the drummers in Colombo Sri Lanka was not able to read any notes, exception Harris Jurampahy of the Jet Liners, and Mohan Sabaratnam of the SpitFires with Dalrene Arnolda.
Beleive it or not , I was one of the the 3 drummers in Colombo in late 6o's who could read notes.
Well my friend that was the Sri lankan music, but our Sri lankan standard was even recognised in Bombay, aftererall
we Sri lankans are the most talented people in Music in south east asia, I am proud to be one of them.
well. like you said it is not the late 6o's or the 70's we are in, my time is gone but I am a good drummer and I could play with any International group, 'cos I could read the notes.
I have played in sweden with lots of groups in late 70's and 80's. I still have the eager to play any kind of Music, 'cos I am not getting any older and I am a rebell will go and on and on and on forever(My wife used to say),
I am very happy to have a wife & my grown up kids who appreciate me.They are proud of their father,and I am proud of them for what they are.

Your kids have a reason to be proud of you. I did not expect anything less.
One thing puzzles me though, why is it that you do not like PF? Is there music bad?
I was also a DJ for quite sometime. One thing I learned early as a DJ was that the crowd must like what they hear. I never did DJ'ing for money but to please a crowd. I did ok most of the time but in 2001 while I was spinning one kid slowly came up to me and asked for a change of beat. He wanted hip hop. Mind you this was on a ship where I was a very high ranking Officer and this was just a kid. That's when I realised I was out of touch and my days as a DJ was over.
When you left SL nobody took old Jothipala seriously. Including me. However, long after the guy died I was fascinated with the pitch that the guy could reach. None have matched it so far. He sang hindi copies mostly. I must admit IMHO I rate him far above any of the sinhala vocalists. Then again it is only an opinion. I am entitled for mine right? |

to tell you the fact, I could easilly play the music you love( let it be anything), Musicians who could read the notes could play it without any difficulties, I am also an hearing and palying musician, so alltogether it makes me both with notes and hearing palying as a musican.
Malli, Infact I love your typ of music too, but for me the beat what it counts, you know what I mean with a beat?
To be honest, I hated H.R.Jothipala but I loved Clarence Wijewardene(our Matale Boy), Annesley Malawane,
Milton Mallwarachchi, Anton Jones, Indrani Perera and many others. Malli one mans poison is another mans food?
Your Jothipala was my poison, dont ask me why. That is the way I cared for this H.R.J.

Do not worry about the tumeric powder anymore,if you worry about someones Tumor,then I could understand it.
you eat our spices as usual like your mom and my mom did it. Did'nt I survive by eating tumeric? so what's the big deal? Dont get puzzeled 'cos somebody spoke ill of Tumeric.
Beleive me, I am an experinced person on all spices.

Sam Sodhi was a bi-intimacyual, this man had tried to use the band members when ever it pleased him, one day I told Sodhi if you are trying to exploit the band members then you are not going to have anything left over in your music branch.
I made it so clear, that he even cried at one time and had begged me not to reveal the truth to his wife. This fellow was a pathetic guy then.
When I was about to quit, he came to me begging and said please would you consider me as your big brother, please use your contact and fix me me some concerts, I said to him okay I will see what I can do.
I have even fixed him conserts at Sugathadasa stadium when M.S.Fernando, Shiromi Fernado, Dharmaratne Brothers, MoonStones, Nihal Nelson, Golden Chimes were performed.
He was so happy that I could use my contacts, he had begged me to come back to the Emeralds and he even gave me the rights to re-arranged the Band.But I have already joined the famous bands in Sri Lanka at that time.
Let me tell you about a talent quiz for bands in colombo in 1968, it was at Elephant Walk Club at bamablapitiya.
We were lots of band among them was the new commers, The Buggs, Spit Fires with Dalrene Arnolda, Hezonites( from kandy)Supersonics(from kandy),The Satelites(from Ja-Ella),
Sam The Man, Harold Seneviratne Combo, Jet Liners, The Savages, The Menezes, however The Jet Liners won the contest, thanks to Mignone Ratnam's husband Tony Fernando of RCA sound system at Mc Callum Road, Colombo.
The Jet Liners was a the famous grop of all at that time, my cousin Indra Raj was the lead giutarist with them at taht time.
We rest thought it was a favourism that Jet Liners won the contest, we were much better thasn them,but Tony Fernando was prominent figure in Colombo and he must have pulled lots of strings to win that contest.
That was our story then.

This is real freaky, the last thing is even freakier
1) New York City has 11 letters
2) Afghanistan has 11 letters.
3) Ramsin Yuseb (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin Towers in 1993) has 11 letters.

This could be a mere coincidence, but this gets more interesting:
