I have been to Kerela twice as a tourist. More than the language, I also found something strange. If you go to the villages, they are exactly like Sri Lanka, with plenty of paddy fields and coconut trees, the people, their appearance, features and complexion are identical to ours, their food is exactly similar to the Sinhalese food, Kavum, kiribath, pol sambol, aapa, idiappa, pittu, (you hardly find them in Tamil Nadu) everything were very similar, and the best part was the dress worn by the village women, it was retha/hetta. For a moment, I thought I was in a Sinhala village. I even asked those people if their ancestors were Sinhalese. Unfortunately, most of them are not familiar with their history.
I had a very good time there, excellent hospitality, since you can speak Malayalam, its worth a visit, you will never regret.

I've heard tamil guys say 'Nalla Kutti' is that similar too?
yes nalla means good.
but typically you'll here 'mani sarakku'
sarakku means badu!!
mani typically means excellent, great or along those lines

Yes yes I have heard about the similarity between Kerala and Sri Lanka too. I have a feelign that all these things that you metioned came to Sri Lanka fom Kerala. The ancient Sinhalese even practised a martial arts similar to Kalari Payat.
That is one of the places I always wanted to visit, yes, I will heed your advice and might go as early as next year. Who is going to come with me?

Lula; yes your right. Kerala is very much like Sri Lanka. My dad has many friends in South India & I had the opportunity to travel with my parents in 1996. What stuck me most is like you said the greenery. it is was indeed very pleasent & if you have travelled to the east of sri Lanka you will notice it is very much the same. In addition to the greenery they have a beautiful canal system. In fact many of the movies (espeially the songs) are shot in kerala. It is also famous for its ayurvedic treatment & also has a unique martial arts. If i remember correct my brother studied it for sometime.
Bonggo, You sure Sinhala was not derivd out of Sanskrit?? More than hindi Telungu letters are very similiar to Sinhala. Infact some say the language Divehi (spoken in the Maldives) is the pure version of Sinhala. |

Those who know us, Know better. Anyone who says Malayalam is not a SL language needs to talk to a Kattadiya in the south, specifically Matara and ask the guy for his roots.
Malayalis are Singhalese. Singhalese are Malayalis.atleast 60%. OUR SL women loved the Malayali men FOR THEY BATHE THEIR WOMEN. THEY KNEW HOW TO CHERISH A WOMAN.
Malayalis have a knack for martial arts which is used to knock down the opponent by inflicting 2 or 3 jabs in the nerve points. This is called VARMAM, Varma adi.
Too bad, Kids like Ruwani either has to learn her ancestry
or come out of her cocoon soon to understand the society in SL. Does Ruwani know who Bala Tampoe is????

In fact, until the 7th century A.D. there was no difference between Tamil and Malayalam. Only after that Malayalam emerged as a diffrent language and the scripts too changed due to the influence of Prakrit from the North.
The early colonist did not see the difference between Malayalam and Tamil and due to their early familiarity with the Malabar Coast, termed even Tamilians as Malabars and the Tamil language as Malabarish Language.
Malayalam has retained more of the classic Tamil words than the present Tamil spoken in Tamil Nadu.
I wonder whether Cyril Mathew and JR were your relatives.
