Bonggo ayya,
Wow!! you deserve something for all that!
My father said Sinhalese came from Sankrit though the letters are like Hindi. How about the Malayali letters? I am mean are they circular like most of the Sinhalese?
I feel bad about not knowing other than Sinhalese and English. Its a pity :( Edited By - Kamani - 20 Jul 2006 16:52:45 GMT |

Guru,
Aiyaalu enda paringngu?
I have met a lot of South Indian Tamils over here and they find it easier to understand Hindi than Malayalam. That is as far as experience goes.
Lula,
Yes macha, we must meet at Mustafa at Serangoon Road and have a nice time. Ngaa nee varoonu poonu!
Now now, you are giving another clue to Ruwani ... macha do you crave so m uch for her attention?
You are right, if you read the Sinhala Dictionary not only a Malayali but a Hindi or a Nepali speaker too will understand 40% of the words. Colloquial and written Sinhala are like two different languages.
Kamani nangi,
If you know two languages, you must in fact be proud of it. There is no harm ion trying to understand other languages as well.
Sinhala alphabet derived from the ancient Brahmi Akshara, just like Malayalam, Telugu and Burmese and many other languages of India. That is why you see a lot of similar characters in these Alphabets.
Sinhala did not come from Sanskrit but has plenty of Sankrit, Paali and Tamil words. Of late, a lot of words from European languages have been added to, enriching the language a lot.
I would say 25% of the Sinhala words are of Tamil origin. |

| TCK, thanks. I was with two Malayalam friends and one Sri Lankan Tamil friend on last Sunday. Some of the words in Malayalam is exactly the same as Sinhalese words and I was ale to follow some of their conversations. |
