Naleen,
Yes that is what i meant. Arjuna hardly played a game for school in 1982 because of national duty. After the tour he returned and played one game against St. Peters and scored 120.
However, when talking of Sumithra Charlie Warnakulasooriya I was referring to 1981. He scored 5 centuries (3 of them more than 150) against Arjuna's 3 in 1981. That is what I thought it should have gone to Charlie. However, I was referring to the best batsman award in 1981 (not schoolboy cricketer of the year, sorry it was a mistake). It went to Arjuna. I had no qualm about it but thought Charlie was more deserving.
If I remember correctly, Naveen de Silva of Wesley College won the schoolboy cricketer of the year award in 1981. That year we had a formidable school team that toured England and did extremely wellagainst counties. Almost everyone of that team played for the country. The next best school team was in 1993.
SCORE: Our guys are well set right now at 268/7 after 46 overs. |

Guru,
With due respect to your highness, Charlie played for Royal in 1980 and 1981. Yes be became famous after that annoying 197 (for Thoras) in 1980. Pity that record still stands. But I rate Duleep Mendis' entertaining 188 in 1973 as the best in the series because it was a 2 day match.
Hey, you were there on the 4th day in 1982. I was there too! Was the closest we have ever been physically? But it was a dreadful day, especially after goin with high hopes in the morning. Embury was the terror.
SCORE:
Well done guys, Sri Lanka 318 for 7 after 50 overs. The last over produced 20 runs! |

Guru,
We might win this match as well but the main feature of this particular match was, for the first time in the history of one day game 4 players got out for exactly seven runs.
That reminds me of a seven glances (not cricket) humour:
7 Glance = 1 Smile
7 Smile = 1 Meeting
7 Meeting = 1 Kiss
7 Kisses = 1 Proposal
7 Proposal = 1 Marriage
And that 1 Bloody marriage has 77777 problems.
So beware of glance! |

i think duleep hit 184 IIRC.
yes a good chance to win this match. middle order collapsed but the 8th wicket partnetship of 60 odd runs at 11 RPO is simply great! |

Guru,
Did you watch the match on TV? Cricinfo was my only source.
England is off to a reaonably well start. Who knows they might pull off a surprise. I hope they won't.
Duleep 184. Thanks for correcting me. I always thought it was 188. He went on to play as a young man in Sri Lanka's first world cup in 1975 and played very well against the aussies (with Lilee and Thommo). Thommo put a bouncer and injured his head. In the end Sri Lanka was 274/4 chasing australia's 318.
In the same match Thommo damaged Sunil Wettimuny's leg too and broke the partnership between Mendi-Wettimuny. They were going great guns when Ian Chappel called Jeff Thomson to bowl. If not for the injuries we would have pulled out a surprise too. Since that day I always supported the teams playing against Australia!
Guess what,I was there too, at the Oval. |
