President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday plans were underway to boost state revenue. One move is to ban Sri Lankans from buying cigarettes at the duty free shop. 'We are losing valuable foreign exchange whilst the Government is also deprived of tax revenue,' he said. The Government last year collected Rs. 31 billion in revenue on tobacco taxes and levies.
Another move which is also partly a revenue exercise is a higher levy on television channels. The Government plans to encourage only a minimum of three channels per company and anything higher would be subject to higher annual payment. At present the levy per channel is Rs. 50,000. The country has also exhausted the available frequencies for television channels and this move is likely to make room for newcomers or full use of existing rights. The Government also believes that TV stations were making good profits.

| The President is talking some nonsense. How can he increase the Foreign Exchange by banning Sri Lankans to buy Cigarettes in Duty Free shops? All persons have to pay normally in Foreign Currency to buy articles in Duty Free Shops. He his discriminating the Sri Lankans. |
