Although the UNICEF has revealed an official figure of 1,358 as being the number of children recruited by the LTTE for their military purposes since January 2006, the real number exceeds that number many fold, military source affirmed yesterday .
Military sources said that the number of child soldiers that were used by the LTTE was much bigger than what the world may know from official figures.
Navy spokesperson, Commander B.K.P. Dassanayake said that it had to be mentioned that the recent incident where two children had surrendered to the Navy after escaping from a LTTE camp was just an isolated incident.
`Sometimes, security personnel have to take precautions in dealing with these child soldier cases which appear before them as there are many occasions where these children had complained against , and even attacked security personnel on they being handed over to their parents,` said Dassanayake.
As pointed out by the Human Rights Watch, the lives of these children and their parents are constantly under threat by the LTTE on account of their fleeing away from their military training.
It has been observed that the LTTE would prefer to recruit children rather than adults to their armed outfit as children are impressionable and easy to persuade with blandishments, military sources said.
Speaking on the recent incident of three child soldiers who have surrendered to the security forces, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said that this was just another incident, in a continuing process and was the first following the Geneva talks.
`They recruit children by force or by abducting or by threatening their parents. These incidents are rarely exposed as the parents would not speak out of fear of the LTTE,` he pointed out.

UN is useless as always :)
they are always late...very rarely finds a solution...worse than any government since they have more 'power' but bad direction :))))
see how all these NGO's and places like unicef is paying they're people....huge salaries....way way more than the same person will earn in another place :)
they are all in it for the money i guess... :)
as they say...for any crime...follow the money trail :) |
