Mobile telephony growing at rapid 15%

Celltel announced last week that it will be increase the number of towers by 500 during the period March to October 2006. It will result in the Colombo and suburbs increasing its towers two-fold while the outstation ones will be pushed up six-fold.

Comprising phase VI and phase VII this is the biggest-ever single expansion programme costing US$ 100 million, CEO Dumindra Ratnayake said.

`The 3rd GSM switch with a capacity of 3 million subscribers has also been commissioned by celltel`.

Mobile telephony is growing at a rate of 15 percent and it may even increase to 25 percent in the not too distant future, he noted.

Celltel is fully owned by Millicom International Cellular SA is a leading operator of cellular telephony services with operations in Asia, Latin America and Africa. At present it has 17 cellular operations with licence in 16 countries, Commercial Director Aniljith Singh said.

The expansion programme will also include a new layer of 1800 MHz (dual band network). Celltel has a subscriber base of one million which is expected to grow by 50 per cent due to this expansion programme, Singh said.
