I have not watched many Sinhala movies. However, I do remember dragging a friend out of bed & going to see a so called Sinhala comedy movie. It was so boring & we didnt understand what was going on ... we left even before the interval. I'm not saying all movies are like that & in my view it doesnt neccessarily need to be Adults Only to be successful. Let there be a good theme & actors (not running around the Bush) Im sure you can have house full shows w/out any difficulty.

I agree with Vimukthi's last sentence in this posting.
Well, the Producers/Directors divert the attention of youth to this stupidity, so that the Adult parliamentarians nudity in politics are not exposed. Political Nudity. A marketing ploy in the cinema industry is 'Adults Only'; in the west an obliging kiss is a norm, in Lanka thats for 'Adults Only'. Ask the Chief Justice - a good practical actor at that.

Magha,

I quite agree on your long comment on the films of the Swedish Director and the roles of our cinema in Sri Lanka.

Its true how our society takes the nudity to account. If the matter is just superficial its equivalent to watching a porn movie to make one satisfies. But showing nudity with a view to express cinematic importance in line with the story it should be provided without demeaning the creative piece of art. Films like 'women in love' back in 1969 where Glenda Jackson starred and a won an Oscar for best actress shows how to do it. Then we have 'Rain man' in 1989 with Dustin Hoffmann as an autistic brother who encounters problems with women and the director uses appropriate scenes with a twist of sound to create awareness in the spectator. So there is absolutely nothing wrong with making good adults only films.

The trouble is Sri Lanka tend to drift away from the main stream adults only to create pretty mediocre type adults only films that have little nudity and no content of social importance but are addressed to school kids who are quite inquisitive to watch adult material due to the social circumstances.

The government has to realise this thus regulate the movie makers to do better films and to educate the youngsters on sexual matters rightly so. Only by then we can enjoy the adult cinema comprehensively.

MaKaSo,

This is what I have been trying to explain in a broader manner to Mr Magha. There are no good or enjoyable adult films for adults other than some collective half-baked junk. If an adult wants to enjoy he/she needs to find an alternate way of watching a proper adult movie which is note easy. I know this place you are talking about Central cinema Maradana and there is another one called Ruby somewhere if I'm correct which shows light adult stuff as well.

Anyway local adult films are not adult as such they are targeted to attract the young school children who normally would not like to go and do flat out studies. But in the name of targeting these kids the Sinhalese cinema has created just useless low budget adult films not worth watching.

Tck,

What are the adult Sinhala films you have watched?

One of my tamil mates was telling me to create 'Basic Instinct' in Sinhalese with a decent Kuttu to do the role of Catherine Tramell. What do you think? Its a good suggestion but I wonder who would take up the Catherine Tramel's role in the Sinhalese version.

Apart from the Local and Western X-rated movies you get, the number of Indian movies are overwhelming and any teenager would be having easy access to them.

Dr A,

The last time i saw a sinhala film is probably a good 15 odd yrs. I remember the roly poly chick Sabitha perera. she had good eyes just like my favorite actress Silk smitha. not many tamils would rate silk as a good actress but she was never given a chance. she wears a saree way below her navel.

Hindi films are pretty much in the forefront of coming to close to the western flicks. Catherine Trammel and her criss crossing legs when interviewed!

ofcourse by now you know that i go for artistic beauty!

Tck,

Yes, I know the cutie beauty Sabitha in the late 80s and early 90s. She was one that the Pakistanis use to date as some said to me. As she starred in many Pakistani Urdu films with the Paki boys you know how they are about? In fact I was quite fond of her. But I recently saw on TV that she has gone all pear shaped with big bum and plum pudding figure of her. Felt sorry for her! Well apparently she has married to an old guy and has a kid too. She must be now 40 something.

I know you well mate about Catherine Tramell's crossing legs story, 'The artistic beauty etc', well its poetic mate. That was one heck of a scene. Well in terms of creative work of art that is.
