Protest in Geneva against LTTE
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 - 5:03 AM SL Time

The Swiss city of Geneva will witness a very peaceful march for peace tomorrow as the peace talks between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) begin.

Hundreds of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and their European friends will demonstrate against the blatant violations of the ceasefire by the LTTE.

The LTTE has violated the ceasefire agreement over 3,000 times and killed Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and hundreds of others during the four years of ceasefire beginning from February 2002.

A registered NGO in Geneva dedicated to the cause of promoting human rights and democracy, the Universal Campaign for the Protection of Democracy and Human Rights, has organised the demonstration on February 22 at 2.00 p.m. opposite the Palais des Nations (United Nations Building) in Geneva.

The LTTE has been accused of assassinations, recruitment of child soldiers, kidnappings and extortion throughout the duration of the Ceasefire Agreement. The Scandinavian observer team, the SLMM recently attributed 3,471 violations to the LTTE as against 162 by the Government.

The organisers request all patriotic Sri Lankans in Europe as well as friends of Sri Lanka to participate.

Liberal democratic Tamil organisations such as Tamil Forum for Peace, an organisation consisting of the Tamil United Liberation Front, Tamil Democratic Congress, Tamil Women`s League, Sri Lanka Muslim Information and the Centre for Democracy and Justice and the Sri Lanka Democratic Forum held a protest in London at the Trafalgar Square on Sunday calling for peace.

They called on the LTTE to open up democratic spaces, stop political killings, abduction and recruitment of child soldiers and extortion rackets.

The Tamil Forum in a release states that the vast majority of the ceasefire and human rights violations were perpetrated by the LTTE and the threat of war particularly by the LTTE cast its shadow over the daily lives of the people.

The Forum points out that people living in the North and East cannot afford another war.
