Film Societies warn govt. against semi-porn movies

An alliance of film societies in the Colombo district yesterday expressed concern over the screening of cheap, semi-porno films from India.
While thanking the government for setting up the Tamil Division at the National Film Corporation, the Colombo Film Society wrote to President Mahinda Rajapakse saying that apart from the cultural damage caused by these semi-porn films, the future of the younger generation too was at stake.
It said these films served little purpose other than filling the front benches of the theatres that rely on them for their up-keep.
It reiterated that if the activities of the Tamil division of the NFC were handled in a proper manner, it could earn valuable foreign exchange and bring forth hidden local talent too.
The CFS said though a large number of Indian producers were coming to Sri Lanka, especially to the hill-country to shoot song sequences, locals were getting little or no exposure through those ventures.

This is true.
Now bankrupt film directors of srilanka even sell their wife's nudity in order to get publicity for their film, to earn big bucks and if possible to earn awrads. |

| Banning these semi-porn movies is useless unless internet content is banned as well. |

People have a right to chose to watch pornography.
The moral deliberations of an adult is of no concern to anyone.
No one is forced to watch porn or anything that they do not want to.
If one finds such material offensive, there is no requirement to watch it.
The choice offered by present society gives ample other alternatives for people to watch and enjoy.
These morally uptight organisations should stay out of trying to dictate to the Sri Lankan populace what their moral values should be - especially sexual. It would be better if such societies use all that energy to at least express their concerns against increasing violence in our films and societies, which are likely to have more of an impact than sex! |

Trying to ban these movies is not going to work. If you try to ban them, it will only create a huge black market for these movies and the associated problems with it. (corruption etc)
The best thing is to educate the people of the repercussions of these movies, if any. And let the people decide what they want to do.
Banning everything is just a useless and outdated policy that does not work. We have to come up with new and innovative ways for tackle social problems. Edited By - anizam - 13 Feb 2006 16:34:16 GMT |

Aritha,
You are quite right. Don't get me wrong I wasn't trying to say Porn was bad but was saying how useless it would be to ban them and yet have them on the internet.
Anizham,
For once I agree with you. Edited By - Ruwani - 13 Feb 2006 19:22:42 GMT |

Ruwani :
What can i say??? :) :) Im so honored that you agree with me :) :). Hopefully, very soon you will agree with me in alot of things :) :)..
See for example - your leaders (Motta rala and the JVP) have totally accepted the peace process i so strongly supported.
Then your JVP comreds have totally embraced the open economy, which they strongly opposed. Have you seen those 150,000 cell phones, the designer shirts, Rs the 1500 hair cuts Winal WeeraMONKEY gets??? - BEAUTIFUL!! :)
In 87 when JR brought in the indians and the provincial councils - your JVP friends burned the whole country. Today???? They cant live with out india and PCs :) :)
So its always been the case. WE LEAD and come up with NEW IDEAS - you and your friends, oppose it for a while, and then eventually agree with everything we Do :) :) :)
If you look at the marxist idelogy which the JVP advocates - its all about banning things - (religion, imports, free speech etc etc....). But Today - you are agreeing with me that banning things will get you no where.
I know, VERY SOON, you and your friends WILL accept everthing we stand for :) :) :) and eventually you and i will be BEST of FRIENDS :) :)
Just curious - where do you live? Australia???

Anizham,
No I live in Sri Lanka, as for the rest of your post, I don't see the point in replying as it goes onto show your misunderstanding about politics in general. |

Ruwani,
youre in lanka. i thought you were in the UK. working late eh.
a sexually repressed society is a frustrated society. when youre frustrated your actions are not the best. so i will have to say screw the film society. atleast the frustration will be contained to one society and the rest can move on. |
