LTTE child recruitment on the rise - Amnesty

THE recruitment of children by the LTTE is on the increase and children are mainly recruited at temple festivals and junctions, Amnesty International (AI) said in its latest report.
AI said even a large international presence following the tsunami has not significantly helped protect children from LTTE recruitment.
The report adds that the LTTE has failed to live up to its commitment to end recruitment and release children following the Action Plan for Children Affected by War signed in 2002 by the Sri Lanka Government, the LTTE, UN agencies and NGOs.
Despite the LTTE`s reluctance to formally release children, it does allow some children to run away while denying them a formal release including release papers that prove they have been released.
Parents had informed the human rights organisation that recruitment of children aged 14 and above by the LTTE is widespread in Government controlled areas.
According to the report, parents and agencies working in Batticaloa believe that less recruitment is taking place in areas dominated by the LTTE.
The report said there is little recourse for families whose children have been recruited. Complaints directly to the LTTE do not usually produce results and where families report to external agencies, such as UNICEF or the SLMM, these agencies can raise the case with the LTTE but are unable to compel the LTTE to release the children.
NGO representatives in Batticaloa had told AI delegates that families are threatened by the LTTE not to report child recruitment and are told: `if you report to the internationals you will only see the body of your child.`
Faced with such threats and with the inability of agencies to gain their release, it is not surprising that many cases of child recruitment go unreported.
When AI raised concerns about child recruitment with the LTTE, it had denied knowingly recruiting children and stated that some children try to join the LTTE by disguising their age.
LTTE officials claimed that once such children come to the notice of the LTTE they are immediately released and returned to their families.
This is the answer that the LTTE has consistently given in response to questions about child recruitment; however, it is contradicted by the accounts of many parents and the reports of UNICEF and other organisations working with children.

My sister's friends own little brother was forciably taken by the LTTE in front of her own eyes in jaffna .. Both her/his parents are very much alive .. he was later released when an international humanitarian agenecy pressured them about some other kids .. He is now in colombo i think ...
so dont give me this B**l S**t about (In all the cases the children who lost all the parents by the state armed forces go the LTTE as a last resort!) .. what c**p
people like you really disgust me .. i have many friends and family who have affected by LTTE violence on our own community .. |

I feel safer now in Sri Lanka than I did before the war. Hence I conclude that the war helped raise our level of external security.
I teach Public Administration and facilitate Public Management.

Yes everybody let me tell you a little story:
I recently pretended to be a thamil individual by the name of 'kumathan' in this forum .. he came across as having an anti-LTTE viewpoint in this forum with the sole purpose of trying to discover how other pro-LTTE thamils responded to the said individuals postings .. this little experiment was spurned on after receiving considerable hostility from certain pro-LTTE posters about my views about the LTTE under my original handle.. it was a personal experiment to see the psychology of certain peoples reaction to dissent within and to understand on some level the environment anti-LTTE thamils live under.. what my little experiment has highlighted is the atmosphere of resentment and hostility thamils with negative experiences at the hands of the LTTE face, from the pro-LTTE thamil community.. If this is any indication of the level of animosity one faces one can understand why incidents in LTTE dominated or even GOSL controlled areas where the LTTE holds sway go unreported ..
I am sorry if this deception has hurt anyone ..
With regards to ' what has the LTTE done to you specifically. ' .. nothing personally .. however they have had an effect on several of my collegues and personal friends who happen to be thamil .. I have seen their video's in all graphic detail .. my impression of this organization is anything but poor ..

'If you report you will see only the body of YOUR CHILD'
Already 6000 children killed in the'war. Double that wounded and permenently psychologically scarred. Future of tamil society destroyed! Parents guttered!!
Now many more are lined up for the same fate !

DrGeorgeBush, When it comes to killings do not forget the Nayaru and Kokilai massacres where infants were hacked to death by none other than the LTTE. The Aranthalawa Massacre Sri MahaBodhi Massacre etc etc the list goes on where innocent men women and children have been massacred courtesy the LTTE. Do not try to justify the LTTE massacres by shielding them with the attrocities committed by the SL forces. When there is armed conflict innocents also die, the LTTE knows that and apparently like that because of the propoganda furthering their cause. It's a known tactic adopted by the LTTE to provoke the forces into attacking innocents because it is amongst the innocents that the LTTE cadre mingle and camaflouge. The latest tactic adopted by the LTTE is to do the dirty work and credit the account of the civilians!
The issue here is that the LTTE is recruiting children for the war. What are your comments on that?

There is a say, Children are Angels and Adults influence them to be devils. Acts like these are totally unacceptable by any organization.
During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Tali ban were recruiting children as young as 9 years old to fight with the mighty Soviet military forces. unaccountable numbers were perished during confrontation.
In this case children's basic human rights invaded, and forced to take part in a cause to fulfill ones selfish desires. |
