Cops` efforts go up in smoke
Saturday, 2 December 2006 - 4:31 AM SL Time

With the ban on smoking in public places coming into effect yesterday, December 1, the Police of Panadura were swift to act. During the morning office rush hour they swooped in into action and arrested three persons smoking at a bus stand and produced them before a magistrate. But the Cops were in for a shock. The Magistrate showed them the law, which stated that smoking is banned in enclosed public places. The Magistrate dismissed the case telling the cops that a bus stand was not an enclosed area.

Vagabond: You have a sick mind.
To you, everything boils down to killing.

Your parents are fortunate that they have not
mistakenly punished you.

To save the enviorment, banned should be
extended to open public places as well.

Cops should know the law!!

Before producing them in the courts they should have framed charges according to the applicable law!

This is the typical shortcoming in the Police Department; they think they are the law!

Hi Saman

Thanks for your comment and apologies if I had offended you or anyone. I am ashamed too. However, I am a product of SL environment so what else would you expect.

If the Bus stand has a shelter where public stands under even if it is totally not enclosed smoking should not be allowed in side . If it is just a bus stop then nothing can be done.

Sure LTTE terrorism had killed more people in Sri Lanka than smoking over the last 30 years, but whether it is war or not we need to move forward as the South of Sri Lanka does when the North and East stagnates behind and even worst than they were thirty years ago.

The ban is a very good move. I, as a non-smoker, wouldn't like to get poisoned, just because some people think they can smoke where ever they like. The planet doesn't just belong to them. It belongs to all of us.
This shows that Sri Lanka is a progressive country. They have realized how dangerous it is and that the health of all the citizens are important. Not only our health, but also the environment, gets affected by this 'bad habit'.
