Vakarai will fall soon: Military
Saturday, 30 December 2006 - 2:40 AM SL Time

An eastern stronghold of the LTTE will likely fall to the military soon following weeks of fighting that has forced thousands of civilians to flee, the military said.

Vakarai, the scene of intense artillery battles with the Tigers since November, is the last major rebel-held town on the east coast after the military drove them out of territory near the strategic port of Trincomalee further north.

`It`s a matter of time now. It could be days, or weeks, but we will get there,` military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe told Reuters in an interview.

`The only thing holding us back is the fear of civilian casualties; they are using them as human shields,` he said.

Analysts said the offensive on Vakarai was a key step in the government`s plan to clear the Tigers from the east. Once the rebels are pushed out, the government plans to hold local elections that a faction of renegade rebels opposed to the Tigers and aligned to the military are expected to win.

Pakistanis allegedly supplying defective arms-report
Friday, 29 December 2006 - 9:45 AM SL Time

In a strategic move to operate in India`s backyard, Pakistani officials have allegedly greased the palms of some senior Sri Lankan Army officials and bureaucrats and resorted to `honeytrap` tactics to sell arms and ammunition of poor quality to Sri Lanka at exorbitant prices.

However, the lid from the brewing Sri Lankan defence scandal blew off recently when the defence forces` frustration reached the top brass after it was discovered that most of the military ware purchased from Pakistan was either sub-standard or second-hand.

A `Top Secret` note, that reached the Government of India through diplomatic channels, said the situation became grim when some of the bombs aimed at LTTE targets by the Sri Lankan Air Force turned out to be dummies and fell in the target areas like stones.

Jayasuriya blasts Sri Lanka to win
Friday, 29 December 2006 - 12:06 AM SL Time
Sanath Jayasuriya blasted 111 off just 87 balls as Sri Lanka chased down a daunting target of 286 with ten overs to spare in the first one-day international against New Zealand at Napier on Thursday.

The hosts had looked well set after a fine century in only his third one-dayer from Ross Taylor helped New Zealand to 285 for eight from their fifty overs at McLean Park.

But a thrilling opening stand of 201 in just 24 overs between Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga (68) set the Sri Lankans up for a seven-wicket victory and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Taylor spanked an unbeaten 128 off 133 deliveries, featuring 12 boundaries and four massive sixes.

The 22-year-old`s final six sailed out of the ground and into a neighboring property, forcing the umpires to call for a new ball.

Anandasangaree tells President to stop de-merger
Thursday, 28 December 2006 - 12:47 PM SL Time
TULF President V. Anandasangree has told President Mahinda Rajapaksa the demerger of the North-East Province was untimely.

`If you are serious about all our people irrespective of their ethnicity enjoying all rights like others, please stop further action on the de-merger and maintain the status quo` the TULF leader told the President in a letter sent to him on Tuesday.

` Having failed these 50 years to find a solution in a unitary state, the only option left is a federal solution within a united Sri Lanka. The international community welcomes it and the local Tamils too. The LTTE is also fully aware that the international community will oppose separation tooth and nail and that the LTTE should agree to a federal solution`, he said.

Tsunami: UN slams Govt., LTTE
Wednesday, 27 December 2006 - 12:29 PM SL Time
The United Nations yesterday slammed Sri Lanka`s warring parties for stalling tsunami reconstruction efforts as the country marked the second anniversary of the disaster.

The outgoing UN Secretary General Kofi Annan blamed both the government and the LTTE for the violence that has slowed rebuilding after the December 26, 2004 tsunami that killed an estimated 31,000 people in the country.

In a statement, he said the conflict between the government and rebels had made reconstruction even more difficult in Sri Lanka.

`No one could have prevented the tsunami`s wave of destruction. But together we can stem the tide of conflict, which threatens once again to engulf the people of Sri Lanka,` Mr. Annan said.

`Farah` seeks Norway`s help
Friday, 29 December 2006 - 9:49 AM SL Time
The owning company of the Jordanian merchant vessel `Farah 3` which still remains in LTTE custody in Mullaitivu has sought Norwegian assistance to get the vessel released, a Norwegian embassy spokesman told the Daily Mirror.

However the Norwegians have advised the owners to coordinate with the government and other relevant parties to have the vessel released as the mandate of the facilitators is only to communicate between the two warring sides and not carry out rescue operations.

Subsequently the vessel owners as well as the local agents held talks with the Foreign Ministry yesterday on moves to salvage the stricken vessel.

`It does not mean we will not assist. We can help with communicating with the LTTE. We have advised the owners to communicate with the government to have the ship removed,` the Norwegian embassy`s acting spokesman Tom Knappskog said.

Inflation 19.3 % in December
Saturday, 30 December 2006 - 2:40 AM SL Time
The Central Bank said yesterday the Colombo Consumers` Price Index (CCPI) at 5114.1 for December, 2006 registered a 19.3 per cent increase compared to December, 2005 and an annual average inflation of 13.7 per cent.

The highest contribution to the increases arose from domestically produced agricultural food commodities. The year-on-year increase in prices for rice was around 10 per cent, while for vegetables, increases were in a range of 1 to 145 per cent. In addition, prices of major imported goods also increased. In response to the increasing price of wheat grain in the international market and the depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee, the import price of wheat grain increased by 24 per cent in October, 2006. This raised the price of wheat flour and bread by about 32 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. Compared to last December, 2005 the import price of sugar too increased, resulting in about 42 per cent increase at retail level, the Central Bank said.

United States checks Govt. on corruption
Thursday, 28 December 2006 - 11:58 PM SL Time
A US Congressional report based on a recent mission by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the Asian region said yesterday the government of Sri Lanka did not take corruption seriously as an issue.

On Sri Lanka, the report said NGOs surveyed were not in agreement that the Government provided ample space in which they could operate within the country.

In addition, there was no shared consensus that `watchdog organizations fear being coerced politically, economically or physically.` but there was agreement that the Government does not take corruption seriously as an issue, the report said.

The mission by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was aimed at examining the state of democracy in the region, with particular emphasis on programmes supported with US Government funding via NGOs.

Looking beyond Vakarai
Saturday, 30 December 2006 - 9:45 AM SL Time
It is speculated that the government might go for an election in the Eastern Province after the capture of Vakarai, which is imminent with the area surrounded and the LTTE combatants trapped without reinforcements and supplies. In other so-called thinly held areas in the East, the LTTE will still be operating, but the military boasts that it could be tackled without much effort. If the East could be cleared as planned, then it will certainly be a turning point in the war. For, the LTTE will have no control over both the strategically important Jaffna and the East, the be-all-and-end-all of its separatist project.

In the past, too, the LTTE was driven out of the East but it managed to hold on to the vital areas of the North, especially Jaffna and mitigate the loss. The East was brought under government control decisively by President D. B. Wijetunga, who conducted the Local Government elections there in the early 1990s. President Chandrika Kumaratunga adopted the opposite of his strategy. She took back Jaffna in 1995, at the expense of the East. She, of course, had compelling reasons to wrest control of that township. The LTTE had put most of its military eggs in the Jaffna basket and gone to the extent of issuing an Eelam stamp which pointed to a move to declare independence unilaterally. She may have thought of making a swift move. She won the day.

Killer waves, sharks and vultures
Wednesday, 27 December 2006 - 12:33 PM SL Time
Corrupt elements in the garb of public servants, who lined their pockets with tsunami relief or abused the rebuilding process for that purpose, have gone Scot free, as we reported yesterday in our lead news item, Merry times for tsunami racketeers. The government is still dithering, without initiating a probe, in spite of an interim report by the Auditor`s General Department, which has shed light on their sordid operations. Several key state institutions have been named in the report as being responsible for the blatant irregularities in the disbursement of tsunami funds and allied matters.

The government`s failure to bring those who have robbed the tsunami funds to book has led to a severe erosion of confidence of the public as well as the international donors who answered Sri Lanka`s desperate call for help in the aftermath of its worst ever catastrophe and channelled the monies of their tax payers to the tsunami victims. It was only the other day that those human vultures that stripped a tsunami victim of her gold chain were sentenced to death. Those who have plundered the money meant for the tsunami affected languishing in welfare centres, too, are vultures; they deserve a similar punishment. They must be named, shamed and punished.

Bring them to book!
Friday, 22 December 2006 - 11:51 AM SL Time
The controversial Oerlikon gun deal has taken a dramatic turn with the revelation that there was a sinister attempt to dupe Sri Lanka into purchasing outdated cannon, which would have had a debilitating impact on the Sri Lanka Navy. According to classified information that The Island is privy to, it is clear that a group of Navy high rankers tried to line their pockets at the expense of national security interests. The Special Presidential Commission appointed by President Mahinda Rajapakse has, we learn, recommended in its interim report tough action against those who are responsible for the scandal. The Commission, comprising Supreme Court Judges Shiranee Tilakawardane, Nissanka Kumara Udalagama and Nimal Edward Dissanayake, had conducted, under trying conditions, painstaking investigations, which included the perusal of stacks of documents and elicitation of oral evidence from a large number of military personnel and civilians, before filing the report.

New Zealand win, squares the series 1-1
Wednesday, 27 December 2006 - 12:32 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka`s decision to give all its squad members an opportunity prior to the five match ODI series against New Zealand didn`t quite work off, as the hosts secured a five wicket win in the second Tewnty-20 International here at Eden Park in Auckland yesterday to square the series 1-1. The tourists decided to rest their three most experienced players, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas along with all-rounder Farveez Maharoof and struggled on a wicket that had pace and bounce.

Sri Lanka failed to make use of their full 20 overs as they were bowled out for 115 in 18.2 overs and despite a middle order collapse New Zealand got home with nine balls to spare.

All roads lead to MCG
Tuesday, 26 December 2006 - 10:10 AM SL Time
England will be looking to stave off the first Ashes whitewash since 1920/21 when the fourth Test starts at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today, the Boxing Day.

But with Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath retiring from Test cricket at the end of the series, Australia will be fully focused on a clean sweep.

Warne, playing on his home ground, needs just one more wicket to become the first man to take 700 in Tests.

A world record crowd of 100,000 is expected on the opening day.

All tickets have been sold for Boxing Day to surpass the 90,800 for the second day of the fifth Test against the West Indies at the MCG in February 1961.

And Warne, who can expect an emotional send-off in his 144th Test, is keen on another humiliation of England.

Ranatunga says he`s lost respect for Crowe
Monday, 25 December 2006 - 9:59 AM SL Time
Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga says that he`s disappointed with the recent comments by former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe on Muttiah Muralitharan`s bowling action. Crowe, now a television commentator, had said that Muralitharan`s doosra, a delivery the bowler has mastered to fox world`s leading batsmen needs to be scrutinized regularly by the game`s governing body.

Ranatunga, a staunch supporter of Muralitharan, told `Sunday Island` that he has lost respect for Crowe.

`If you are not happy with something you raise your concerns as and when you see it. You don`t wait till your team loses and then make a big hue and cry about it. Why didn`t Martin have any concerns when the New Zealanders were winning in Christchurch? Why does he all of a sudden raise issues when the team is losing? It`s disappointing,` Ranatunga, Muralitharan`s mentor said.
