EU under Germany may lift LTTE ban

A lifting of the ban on the LTTE by the European Union (EU) is now a possibility because Germany is going to be EU President (for six months) from January 1, says the Colombo-based The Sunday Times.
In a Frankfurt-datelined story, the paper said that at the very least, an EU under Germany would put economic pressure on the Sri Lankan government to abandon its military campaigns and return to the negotiating table for meaningful talks with the LTTE.
Germany has already stopped its aid for tsunami reconstruction in Sri Lanka.
Economic Cooperation Minister Heidmarie Wieczorek-Zeul had told Der Tagesspiegel that her ministry had stopped the ?19 million pledged to Sri Lanka because of the war there, and hoped that other Western governments would follow suit.
The Sunday Times quoted an official of Wieczorek-Zeul`s ministry as saying that as a co-chair of the Tokyo Aid Lanka Conference, the EU led by Germany would `redouble its efforts to re-energise the peace process,` in Sri Lanka.
The paper further said that many NGOs had written to the German Minister asking her to get the EU to lift the ban on the LTTE as the ban had made the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government take extreme positions, which in turn were preventing NGOs from working in the North-East.
The EU had banned the LTTE in May 2006.
According to The Sunday Times there is a move among human rights workers in the EU to lobby member countries on the need to get the ban lifted.
Interestingly, one of the key participants in this movement is Viraj Mendis, a Sri Lankan from the majority Sinhala community who heads the International Human Rights Association from his base in Germany.

Buying Pakistani junk will not solve the problem in Sri Lanka,it serve only the Pakistani interest to escalate the problem and making money by any means,as like they are doing in India.
Only Economically powerful countries like Germany can bring the waring parties to the peace table, by creating an environment for peace..To do this,both parties must move freely to exchange their views,also must make them trust each other.
Cutting the finger from the body will not cure the sickness,we must try to cure it without removing the part of the body..
So,IC must put pressure to the Mahinda madness fellows to stop escalating the problem from bad to worse..
Hope, Mr.Chindana's head will function properly in the year 2007..not like a remote controlled robot, it works in 2006...If the war mongers try to act like Hitler, Only Germany can explain the outcome of this... |

So what are the comments gonna be for this topic?
- Germany is an ally of LTTE. Their Chancellor was rewarded with a Ranch by LTTE recently. ;-)
- Viraj Mendis is a brainless maggot bribed by the LTTE. ;-)
- Germans are not of Aryan race as they act to sabotage SL's future. ;-)

Finally, I would like to see someone issuing a warning to Germany, probably a heavy handed one, using his keyboard. LOL

The German government should examine the problem in Srilanka with an open mind. The LTTE is without a trace of doubt a ruthless terrorist group with tentacles extending globally. This group has operated for too long under the disguise of freedom fighters, when in fact they have killed and tortured their very people they claim to be fighting for under the pretext of freedom. Enough is Enough, the world is fast loosing patience with the LTTE...........The people of Srilanka are sick and tired of the endless peace talks and the WARS of attrition, 2007 should be a decisive year to exterminate the LTTE leadership and strengthen the TULF as a sole and legitimate democratic representative of the TAMILS people of Srilanka.

Too early to predict anything, but let us wait and see, since it is always harder to tear down a law, than put it in place. At the least let us hope they convince other nations to cut aid to the criminal Sri Lankan state. Germany has already indicated they would like to see this happen.
As Tamils do not benefit from such aid in any case it doesn't matter to us. The government on the other hand will now no longer have the luxury of spare foreign exchange to wage war, they will need that foreign ex to meet some of the needs that the aid previously did. Unless of course they are going to ignore the needs of the Sinhala people too, as they have been doing to Tamils for decades.
This is good timing with the government aided and abetted child abduction and soldiering situation going before the UN Security Council as well in January. 2007 is surely going to be a fun year for the criminals in power.
BTW I wonder when Brigadier General Karuna hero of the Sri Lankan nation is going to come out with news that Germnay gifted a 6' TV screen to VP as well ;)
Its some kind of tradition all foreigners who wish to befriend the LTTE must present TV's, ala Norway ;)

2007 could be seen as the beginning of the Economic War between the the GOSL and the LTTE.

SL or any one else can issue warnings or whatever against Germany for it's stand regarding the LTTE but the outcome can be predicted and it will be a ' pus wedilla' as SL is not a significant nation in the world and many countries are not very concerned about what happens in SL till a major calamity like the tsunami strikes.
Anton Balasingham a British Citizen and a leader of a terrorist group banned in the UK was able to freely live in that country and was even accorded more or less a VIP funeral unhindered by the British authorities. Did the British Govt even strip him of his British Citizenship for being a leader of a banned terror group? Would the British Govt allowe such a thing to a leader of the Al-Qaida? Why is that? Did the GOSL protest to the British Govt?
The fact is SL and the GOSL are not important to Britain any more. Similarly SL and the GOSL are not important to Germany or most other countries. Even if SL is wiped off the face of Earth the world has nothing much to lose. Some countries may not even realise SL is not there!
When the SL President officially visits the US or UK what is the prominence given by the media and oficials of those countries? Compare that with the PM of India officially visiting those countries and the prominence given by the media and officials. Contrasting isn't it? Why is that? SL is just a 'pain in the butt' to many countries, that is why. Though the people in SL think a hell of a lot about how important SL and it's leaders are in the world the reality is that SL is insignificant.

Economic or otherwise, it is time the venemous tamils community realise that day in and day out it is the tamil people in Sri lanka who are suffering and being brutalised.
If there are any right minded people, it is time to tell the maniac Prabakaran, that his time is up and there will be no more donations for that final war..........
This is possible if the overseas tamils does not intend to use the LTTE as a vehicle for them to ride on for their own personal and selfish gains.
It is time the overseas tamils recognised the right to a peaceful life for their local counterparts in Sri lanka. |

It's not only some tamils overseas, there are some 'suddas' also who help the LTTE in it's fund raising activity. There are also countries who are dual faced that support the LTTE. They have one face for the GOSL and another face for the LTTE. They seem to support the GOSL but also support the LTTE.
How did the LTTE flag and the US Flag end up being carried side by side in New Jersey at a sports festival at the beginning of last year which was attended by some US government officials also?
How did Anton Balasingham a leader of a SL terror group remain a British Citizen while the organisation itself was banned in Britain and how was it that he got a VIP funeral in Britain unhindered by the British authorities? Would a leader of the Al-Qaida get the same treatment.
How does the LTTE still have it's Office at Catherine Road in East Ham in East London?
It's the same in many other countries including France, Canada and Australia. The LTTE supporters carry out their work without any problem from the authorities in those countries except may be for an occassional raide just to satisfy the GOSL.

Thanks for informing us venemous Tamils, but we have known this since even before 1948, the brutality of the Sinhala state.

I dont know how true this story is but this clearly shows one thing. The international communities opinion is changing regarding SLG. First it was stopping all aid to SL. Now the talk of this.
Many of us predicted this was going to happen under a Brainless, Visionless thug and Fraud like MR. The world gave this Jack ass one year to get his act together. But he is ONLY concerned about CLINGING on to power and destroying SL in the process. A Comittee appointed by this VERY SAME FRUAD, recomended he trash the PUNNAKKU chintanaya and go for a Federal status. However, he is ONLY concered about power - so he rejects it.
In the North we have a Murderous thug (Sun Goat). In the South we have Racist Dog (Moda Raja). Two thugs holding the destiny of SL to ransom to make their power hungry dreams come true. However, The world is NOT going to take one thug over another.
This is EXACTLY what the LTTE was hoping would happen when they backed MR for president. Slowly but surely it is happening. The Ban might not come off but the world is surely going to put presseur (economic, political) etc...
I wonder what all those Motta Ralas PUNNAKKU eating Hooters (expecially on this forum) will do... Interesting year ahead.
