Cadres of the rebel Karuna faction struck a heavy blow to three LTTE camps in Batticaloa yesterday morning, allegedly killing 35 Wanni cadres including a local area commander and injuring at least 20 more.
Some 200 Karuna cadres, attached to the commando and deep penetration units of the renegade group, attacked the LTTE?s VIP, women?s and training camps situated in the Toppigala or Baron?s Cap area at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in a 90 minute confrontation.
A spokesman for the Karuna Group, the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikkal, Asad Maulana said that Special Commander ?Pillayan? had led the attack which targeted a high ranking LTTE cadre who was supposed to be in one of the three camps at the time.
?Our intelligence reports told us that either Banu, Ramesh or Jeyam were going to be at the camps. However, we could not confirm whether any of them were among the dead we managed to count,? Maulana told The Nation.
Military sources however confirmed that a senior LTTE commander had been killed in the attacks, saying that although his body had not been recovered, intelligence reports had indicated that Special Leader of the Charles Anthony Brigade, self-styled ?Lt. Colonel? Weeramani had been killed in the fighting at Toppigala.
According to the Karuna faction spokesman, two Karuna cadres had been injured in the confrontations, but losses reported had not been heavy on the rebel faction.
According to the pro-LTTE Tamilnet website, the Tigers had successfully repulsed the attack by their rebel faction and recovered the body of one Karuna cadre and captured another alive. The website also reported that the Sri Lanka Army was providing field artillery support to the Karuna group during the attack, but this could not be independently confirmed, with military officials claiming they knew very little about the incidents since they had taken place in LTTE controlled areas.
The confrontations took place some 35 kilometres away from government held area, the TMVP spokesman said.
The Karuna faction launched a separate attack on a mini LTTE camp in the Paththiruppu area of Kalawanchykudy yesterday afternoon, allegedly killing three Wanni cadres and losing two of their own men.
The Sri Lanka Air Force also stepped up the pressure on Tiger gun positions yesterday, with air raids over Vakarai, an area that has been hotly contested in recent weeks. The latest sortie came just three hours after the Karuna group attacks in the Toppigala region. The Defence Ministry said in a statement that there had been another strike carried out on a Sea Tiger Base in the Pudukudiyirippu area of Mullaitivu. |

Specialforces is trying to verify the assesination of viramani...which will be the single beiggest blow to the ltte this year after death of antan bala...
until such time folks please take the report as speculation...
field commnders special forces spoke to in the east a few minutes back said that the rumour was afload but it was not as yet verified...
specialforces will get back when time permits...!

Anud it may work you know...its huge conspiracy in the pipeline and many many underhand bribes and deals going on...mangala and his gay gang along with spentoffs like chandrika are waiting in til mahinda's mounting popularity dips to attack...
its mangala-chandrika-ranil-tiran alles-lasantha -velu axis of evil thats wating to take him...
ranil is waching it all and will strike when the time is opptune with mangala and chandrikas help...may god save mahinda from the evils who try to destroy him...may he get all the power to brave these cheap self seeking clowns and thier games...
may the triplegem bless our leader hon MR ,gotabaya and sarath and other commanders who have become hot targets now in the ltte hit list...!

Besides, couldn't you have posted this in another thread? You are turning the New Years thread into a political one, which is not what anyone wants I suspect. So I at least will digress from here on out.
