Two years after tsunami, but more schools yet to be rebuilt
Tuesday, 26 December 2006 - 10:11 AM SL Time

As the country today marks the second year since the tsunami catastrophe, it was revealed yesterday that a large number of damaged schools are yet to be reconstructed forcing thousands of students to study in neighbouring schools.

A top Education Ministry official said more than 180 schools were partly or completely damaged by the tsunami two years ago disrupting the studies of thousands of students.

He said so far only 34 such schools had been reconstructed by the INGOs which undertook the task of rebuilding them

He charged that the reconstruction process in the northern and eastern provinces had also been delayed due to the volatile security situation.

He said the rebuilding of 25 schools in Jaffna and Mullaitivu and about 13 schools in Trincomalee had been put on hold as foreign donors were reluctant to go to the areas due to security risks.

He said though the UNICEF is rebuilding two schools in the north with whatever cement stocks available, the situation might worsen with a severe shortage of cement in the area.

The officials also said some foreign NGOs had reconstructed schools equipping them with all modern facilities such as high-tech laboratories, audio-visual apparatus and computer labs.

`Of course, the intention of these INGOs were to provide fully-fledged schools instead of the present ones. Some of the reconstructed schools have more facilities than those found in Colombo schools. This was also a contributory factor for the delays in reconstruction process,` he said.
