Dec 23, Colombo: Among the countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Sri Lanka has placed sixth in violating human rights, a report said.
According to a SAARC Human Rights Report released last week, Sri Lanka placed sixth among the seven SAARC countries, with key concerns being the fragile Ceasefire Agreement of 2002 and the disappearance of ethnic Tamils whether journalists, political activists or innocent persons.
?The recent killing of aid workers, targeting of civilians and imposition of anti-terror laws will have direct bearing on the ranking of Sri Lanka`s human rights record in the future,? Asian Centre for Human Rights Director Suhas Chakma said.
According to the SAARC Human Rights Violators Index 2006, Bangladesh ranked the no. 1 violator of human rights, followed by Bhutan (2), Nepal (3), Maldives (4), Pakistan (5), Sri Lanka (6) and India (7).
