In India, the railway works much better than most other government departments. in sri lanka their is no government department that can claim that honour.
our civil servants are hopelessly corrupt and inefficient - india's civil servants are reasonably efficient and corruption is the exception and not the norm (in their ranks)
India look to build a glorious future - Sri Lanka yearns for its glorious past
India is full of Indians - Sri Lanka is full of labels (Demala, Kandyan, Mukkal, Buddhist, Parayan, Christian, Eastern Muslim, etc.)
Two different countires with two different peoples and two different destinies. Our paths diverged several thousand years ago. we're heading in different directions. get used to it! |

The country is corrupted and the railway system does not work all because of Kumar Rupasinghe and his NGO.
There is a 'Baka Pandithaya' in the forum bought cheap by LTTE Terrorists who comes to his own stupid conclusions as he was also given the TTV as a special gift for treachery.
He has developed selective dementia not seeing that where there is power or money there is Kumar Rupasingha, also When there was a struggle for power and bickering between CBK and RW , Prabhakaran can buy breathing space exploiting the stupidity of RW. Edited By - magha - 21 Dec 2006 07:30:35 GMT |

Improving the quality of service of the public transportation system in Sri Lanka is a very difficult task. Introduction of Private bus service in Sri Lanka by JRJ improved only the efficiency of the public transport to a certain extent but not the quality of the service . Furthermore it created an unprecedented level of road hazards , congestion and pollution in cities . At this stage vast majority of The public is not able to afford a quality service ,hence the exploitation of the public to a much higher level, occurred when privatization of the bus service was done.
Most of the people who use Trains on daily basis are those who commute to work. With ever increasing cost of living and poor salaries these people will not be able to afford to travel by train if expectations of the service kept at a higher level. The most important thing need to be done at higher level is safety. The public is also responsible for the proper maintenance of the public transport system offered to them at a discount. This is where the proper usage of Public toilets need to be emphasized whether it is in the street, shopping mall or the Train. Just Try to keep a roll of Toilet paper in a toilet of a train , before one turns around it will be missing. Interestingly except in Katunayake International Air port , in many other air ports in third world countries including , Delhi, Karachchi, Jordan and etc one will see a cleaner standing at the entrance to the toilet offering you a piece of toilet paper going in to the Toilet. I have seen this at liberty plaza Colombo too. This shows the level of the public who uses these facilities.
Long time ago as a student traveling in Europe I spent a few nights in an accommodation set up temporary during summer time in a foot ball stadium in London called tent city, for students traveling. There were very clean showers and toilets. They have even covered the walls with cardboard so any body wants to write graffiti can do that. However there was a notice posted in every Toilet in big letters which said ' In England we flush the toilet'.
When JRJ in 70's wanted to introduce Television to Sri Lanka some Pundits protested. They had various arguments. Some said that the SLBC should be improved before TV comes to Sri Lanka. Others said we should start with Black and White transmission and not colour. Some were dead against Television because of commercials.
The expansion of railway system in Sri Lanka is a necessity. It should be used more as a mode of transportation of goods which could bring more revenue to the CGR, decrease traffic congestion and environment pollution . The quality of the service will improve with more public awareness of the need to protect this public service offered to them at a discount like the health services. When the living standards of the country improves, the demand for better service will increase too and could be met with a higher prize.
Government has to heavily subsidize certain services inorder for those services to reach the public needs , but at the same time public needs to show respect to those subsidized services and help to improve the quality of those services by active participation and contribution. There is a limit to say 'moda katha'. It would be very good if people dont talk about things they know nothing about.
I cannot help if some people try to understand their surroundings by looking at the small picture.
Yes, in the small picture, English built the Southern railway line with no economical interests. They established the Department of Archaeology (and also the Museum). They built the Royal College (Colombo Academy), and thereby paved the way for a Chauvinist like Muchalinda to say Moda Katha against them. That is the small picture.
In the big picture, they did not come here to study archaeology. They did not come here to provide better transportation facilities to Sourtherners. They did not come here to teach us. But they did come here to rob us, to rob us systematically.
There may be people who appreciate a burglar for saving energy by switching off a bulb in a house he entered to rob (or for closing a leaking tap). Unfortunately, it is not the practice of Muchalinda to appreciate such culprits. He is very happy to be called a Modaya by those who appreciate such colonialists.
Muchalinda is not surprised at all. There cannot be any reason for someone who appreciated Portuguese for their deeds in Sri Lanka, to stop admiring British.
Merry Christmas.
