COLOMBO(AP) - Security forces shot dead at least six Tamil Tiger rebels during a confrontation in Sri Lanka?s restive eastern province, officials said on Thursday.
The troops and a group of fighters from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) clashed near Poonani on Wednesday night and security forces recovered the bodies of six Tigers, a military official in the area said.

Injured Army Sergeant Found Among Dead Tiger Terrorists
BATTICALOA: TROOPS ON ROUTINE patrol at MEEYANKULAM in PUNANI, WELIKANDA area on POLNNARUWA - BATTICALOA main road confronted a group of LTTE terrorists Wednesday (13) midnight when the terrorists were moving in the dark.
The confrontation ensued an armed clash that lasted nearly for one hour between troops and terrorists.
In early hours on Thursday (14), troops conducted a search in the area in question and recovered dead bodies of five LTTE cadres from the location, who were believed to have died in the midnight confrontation.
One soldier, Sergeant K.M.S. RATHNAYAKE who went missing on 5th October along with 11 others after clashes in the area north of MANKERNI was found alive but injured among dead terrorists.
Troops rushed the injured sergeant to the POLONNARUWA general hospital for immediate treatment.
Troops maintain that terrorists were attempting to cross the main road taking the Army Sergeant forcibly to an undisclosed destination in un-cleared areas.
Twelve soldiers went missing after a confrontation with the LTTE in the general area of MANKERNI on 5 October 2006. Later, eleven of them were found dead and Sergeant K.M.S. RATHNAYAKE was confirmed being held under LTTE detention. Edited By - Achilles - 14 Dec 2006 08:01:26 GMT |
