President Mahinda Rajapaksa is seriously considering implementing the Capital punishment to curb violence in the country, Presidential Secretariat sources said.
Several magistrates met President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees and insisted on the need to implement the Capital punishment which they maintained was the only way to combat increasing violence in the country.
The President told the magistrates he couldn`t take a decision single-handedly on the issue but promised to consult the experts and take a decision soon.
Since June 23, 1976, there had been no hanging in Sri Lanka, although death sentences were handed down continuously by the High and Supreme Courts for murder and drug trafficking convictions.
Among the magistrates who participated at the meeting were District Magistrate Chandana Jayathilake, Colombo Chief Magistrate Ms Sarojini Kusala Wijewardene, District Magistrates M.Z Razeed and Sisira Ratnayake and Magistrate Krishanthi Dodangoda. President`s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga also participated.
Former President J.R. Jayewardene did not sign the death penalty orders and instead commuted the death sentences to life imprisonment.
At present there are about 100 prisoners on death row in Sri Lanka.
The need to reinstate the Capital punishment surfaced again during Chandrika Kumaratunga regime after the killing of High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya on November 19, 2004.
The magistrates also requested President Rajapaksa to place their salary scale on a higher level at which point the President`s Secretary Weeratunga said the matter was being finalized.

Yes in order to curb crime and also to eradicate CORRUPTION, hang them high. Roots of corruption remain with the politicians and those who are propped up by the politicians. Hang all of them high.
Since the so called freedom, the stooges of the Colonists and their decendents continue to exploit the country... and process continues while the majority, Sinhala and Tamils, continue to remain 50+ years behind. This is Crime against humanity... biggest crime. Edited By - Senaka007 - 13 Dec 2006 13:14:11 GMT |

| This is a great idea SL could celebrate the reinstatement of Capital punishment with mass hanging of the 100 prisoners presently on death row. Celebrative memorabilia could be sold to the spectators of this mass hanging to generate funds and use it to hang more SLankans. |

Our motherland has become a Failed State and we are very close to 100th place in Transparency International-- (So corrupted)
Present day politicians, most of them the descendants of Stooges of the Colonists, continue to exploit the country. Chandrika, Anura etc are all freeloaders and our fools continue to gather round them....
JR opened the door to political corruption by giving them everything free including duty free cars.
We need a leader in the class of Gandhi, Nelson Mandella, Martin Luther King to lead the country -- free from corruption and establish a law abiding nation...
As long as our people continue to rally round people like Chandrika, Anura, MR, Ranil, the JVPers etc; we will remain poor and miserable.
Recently the SLFP, UNP, JVP etc all joined hands to increase their salaries by more than 100%.. This act alone demonstrates the quality of our politicians... What can we expect from the law enforcement and administrative personnel. |

The President told the magistrates he couldn't take a decision single-handedly on the issue
He's got to get permission from the maha sangha.
How hypocritical is this? The Buddhist clergy advocates war to protect land which kills a lot of innocent people while being against putting to death who is condemned by law for having done evil against innocent people.

The solution is not to resort to a penalty system (death) that has been a proven failure world-wide, but to make the prison system more rigorous and self-sustaining.
This involves engaging professional prison managers who can make the resident population a valuable source of captive labour. The income to be generated can be used to upgrade the system and make it further economically productive. However, history shows that there is a low ceiling to prison productivity, since at some stage production needs clashes with security concerns of such an establishment.
Re-instating the death penalty will create an obstacle to extradition of those who commit crimes against Sri lanka in foreign nations that do not permit the death penalty. As a nation affected by international terror, Sri lanka needs to evaluate this particular aspect very carefully in arriving at a decision on the death penalty. |

Where do you get this garbage ?
Do a reality check.
Stand by a major road and take stock of the values of vehicles passing you by for 5 minutes. Your count will run into multi-millions of ruppees.
Then rougly estimate the running expenses of those vehicles, which passed you by within 5 minutes. That would run into thousands of Rs per month as well.
In Failed states things like that do not happen in the street.
Reality checks are great a habit. They keep you in the money in situations that get too technical or confusing. Edited By - Sandman - 13 Dec 2006 22:41:29 GMT |
