| | News Image 10341 - Anti-poverty banker accepts Nobel Monday, 11 December 2006 - 3:43 AM SL Time - Some pictures are worth a million words | | | Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank have received the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in the Norwegian capital Oslo.
Mr Yunus founded the bank, which helps people out of poverty by giving them small, usually unsecured loans.
Mr Yunus, 66, said he would use the 10m Swedish kronor ($1.35m, £730,000) prize money to `find more innovative ways` to help the poor launch businesses.
`Poverty is a threat to peace,` he told the awards ceremony.
`The frustrations, hostility and anger generated by abject poverty cannot sustain peace in any society in the world.`
He added that while terrorism had to be condemned `in the strongest language`, the world needed to tackle its root causes.
`I believe that putting resources into improving the lives of the poor people is a better strategy than spending it on guns,` Mr Yunus said.
He set up the Grameen Bank in 1976 with just $27 from his own pocket. Thirty years on, it has 6.6 million borrowers, of which 97% are women, according to the bank`s website.
Nobel prizes are always presented on the 10 December anniversary of the death of their creator, Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.
Mr Yunus, the first Nobel laureate from Bangladesh, was accompanied by bank board member Mosammat Taslima Begum at the ceremony.
Norwegian Nobel Committee chairman Ole Danbolt Mjoes said that by giving the award to Mr Yunus, the group wanted to highlight not only the fight against poverty, but also dialogue with the Muslim world and the need to empower women.
`Micro-credit has proved itself to be a liberating force in societies where women in particular have to struggle against repressive social and economic conditions,` he said. | | |

That's what Ranil, Solheim, and Prabha planned to do. But CBK jumped in to the middle and asked for another share. However, everything messed up. Prabha lost the hopes of the Nobel Peace Prize, and now he is going after the 'Piece'
Mahinda can't win the peace prize either, it's just a joke.
There are a lot of talented scientists living in the west: east too. One notable scientist is Dr. Malik Pieris, who discovered the 'Sars' virus. He was one potential candidate, but missed the chance. These days, Genetic related research dominate everything in medicine, Biology related researches are in the war for Chemistry, Economy: never know.
I hope the medical team who perform Parkinson's disease surgeries will at least be mentioned in the next year.
Let's wish some one can push the envelope a but further |

Sri Lanka also had rural banks which did the same thing.
I think the only extra thing this guy did was he wrote it to a scientific journals. So the dummy scientists and bureaucrats living in air-conditioned offices in the west noticed it and recommended it to NoBEL Committee. |

Dr.Ynus has proved some of the banking and financial concepts are worng. His micro credit system has been challenging other commercial banks.
He did not write reaserch papers like others instead his practical works negated others' theories.
The beauty of this Grameen bank is the borrower has to show that he/she has no income or assets in order to be qualified for the loan.
I think Ceylinco bank was trying to promote this concept. I don't know how successfull they were. |

Punchimahinda with lokku ideas.

Every one who ruled this country from Banada to mahinda really deserves a prize for showing the world as a good lesson how not to administer a country and how not to treat the minorities.
Any one who do not not follow these morons will know how to do it. They should include the Buddhist clergy too for showing the world what are the things Lord Buddha did not preach or asked them not to do.
Punchi, you are right, all of them deserve and ask Rambukwela to make an announcement. |

In SL chances are very less for peace prize till Praba is alive.
However, we Tamils could nominate VP for 'Nobel terrorist prize'. Make a book out of VP's last 30-year speeches and foward it to the Nobel committee.
Don't forget to take the list of Tamils assassinated by VP and the clan. This proves that he is a freedom fighter and represents Tamils.
Prize money could use to buy some weapons and to pay the tuition of his children.
Cheer leaders could take their drums and arack to the event.
Cheers!! |
