MEP rejects `majority report`

The MEP has rejected the hotly disputed recommendations made by an 11-member expert panel to the All Party Representative Committee (APRC). The statement referred to as the `majority report` called for far reaching constitutional changes, recommending among other things a bicameral legislature and two vice presidents from among the minorities.
Prof. Nalin de Silva, who represented the MEP in the 17-member expert panel told The Island that the majority was not acceptable to them. Referring to our lead story headlined `Sharp differences in Constitutional panel, APRC over peace plan` last Friday (December 8 issue) de Silva said that he was dismayed over the publication of certain points contained in the interim report submitted by the majority of the panel of experts. He said, `Together with this report another report by four members of the panel, and two other documents were submitted at a joint meeting of the panel and APRC held on Wednesday the 6th. It was agreed that all the documents would be treated with utmost confidentiality and that their contents would not be divulged to the press. I am not aware how the contents of the majority reached the press.`
`Though the APRC never requested the panel of experts for a report on a `solution` to the so called ethnic problem two reports and two documents were submitted to the joint meeting held on Wednesday. The APRC has not finished its deliberations, and it is hoped that once consensus is reached in the committee, the proposals would be communicated to the proper authorities. It is not a problem that could be solved in a few weeks, nor one that can be dragged on for years without finding a solution. However, it appears that there is a person or group that is interested in ruining the hopes of the APRC by trying to rush its views to the President and the public in the guise of a `solution` to the problem. It has to be emphasized that the views of the politicians who have been rejected at elections over and over again cannot be construed as a solution to the so called ethnic problem.`
`As the important contents of the majority group have reached the press, I am reluctantly compelled to inform the public, through the press that I, as the member representing the MEP, am opposed to the views expressed in the report of the majority of the panel of experts, and that I do not consider the majority of the panel to represent the majority of the people of the country. Further, it has fallen on me the duty of rejecting outright the contents of the interim report of the majority at the APRC, as the MEP does not subscribe to the views expressed therein.`
....Govt. distances itself
The government yesterday distanced itself from the `majority report`.
Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa dismissed the perception that the ruling coalition subscribed to the controversial recommendations.
He expressed belief that the report was leaked to the press immediately after the government took tough anti-terrorist measures, subsequent to the assassination bid on the Defence Secretary Colonel (Retd) Gotabhaya Rajapakse, to undermine the government.

As usual the sinhala politicians are playing politics at the APCC. No consensus solution is expected from these vile politicians.
Prabhakaran was right all along about how the sinhala politicians will behave when it comes to a solution for the ethnic strife. The sinhala extremists have too little public support but too much influence in politics and this is the reason that no political or peaceful solution is feasible.
The IC should take note of what this sinhala racists are up to and will understand why the tamils wish to have their own state. |
