JVP: President missed chance to pull out of CFA

The JVP Saturday faulted the government for reiterating commitment to the Oslo-arranged Cease-Fire Agreement (CFA) saying President Mahinda Rajapakse passed a golden opportunity to quit the CFA over the assassination bid on his brother Gotabhaya, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence.

Dismissing criticism of the disputed decision to resort to tough anti-terror laws in response to the latest attack, the JVP emphasised the need to defeat the LTTE militarily.

While anti-terror laws are welcome, would they be enough to meet the growing threat posed by the LTTE, a senior spokesman asked. The LTTE couldn`t be brought to its knees by enacting legislature, he said.

`A co-ordinated military effort is needed to weaken the group. It will not compromise until it retains the military capability,` he stressed.

The strained relations between the SLFP-led coalition government and the JVP hit a new low after Rajapakse reiterated his commitment to the four-year CFA. Contrary to reports the government has not been divided over Rajapakse`s decision, the Sunday Island learns. Although several ministers and MPs called for a resolute campaign against the LTTE hardly anyone pressed for the proscription of the LTTE, a move which would have automatically terminated the CFA.

The JVP said that the president would regret his decision. `He is trapped,` a spokesman for the JVP connected Patriotic National Movement said. By unilaterally pulling out of the defunct CFA he could have initiated a fresh course of action to tackle the issue.

He expressed the belief that the CFA would not neutralise the threat. In fact, the LTTE, the TNA and their sympathisers both here and overseas would use the re-imposition of the PTA to attack the government over its human rights record.

The JVP is continuing to pressure the government to terminate the CFA.

Political sources said that President Rajapaksa quite rightly dismissed the JVP led move which would have antagonised the international community, particularly the US and the EU.

The UNP lauded the decision not to take a hasty decision. A UNP MP accused the JVP, JHU and groups with similar views of trying to plunge the country into chaos. They took advantage of the assassination bid to pressure Rajapakse, he said, adding that the President may have given into pressure if the UNP and the international community did not solidly back him.

He lauded the President for blocking the JVP move which he described as its second major setback after the last presidential election. In October the SLFP and UNP agreed on a two-year truce to facilitate the peace process.

The UNP said that if the government quit the CFA and thereby the peace process, their MOU with the SLFP would not have served any purpose.

Government sources said that party seniors are of the view that the government quitting the CFA would be detrimental on many fronts?particularly international.

This rathu sahodarayas don't seem to have a clue about the implications of the GOSL unilaterally pulling out of the CFA.

The Mahinda government is cleverly conducting a war without publicly pulling out of the CFA and this gives them the excuse to continue telling the IC that it is always ready to talk peace.

I hope the JVP intensifies its campaign and forces the GOSL to pull out of the CFA. The JVP and the JHU are the best friends the Tigers have on the sinhala side.

While I believe that the JVP & JHU are a bit overzealous in their patriotism, I personally support Mahinda's decision not to withdraw from the CFA or ban the LTTE. Doing so would have had an impact on the int'l community's stand on us and probably plunged the country back to full-blown war, which I think we're not FULLY prepared for yet.

We need to properly defeat the LTTE militarily, instead of just making small gains or repelling their attacks, which is what's happening now. But to do that we must first make the necessary preparations (full use of the $1.3 billion war budget).

By not banning the LTTE, Mahinda, I hope, is buying time until our military is ready to wipe the scum off the face of our beautiful island.

Tarquin,

Well, already 4 MiGs are on their way from Ukraine. More goods will come, I presume. But don't worry man. We're gonna slaughter you guys.

It's no secret the LTTE is running short of manpower. Maybe you can help their cause by signing up. If you're lucky, you might even score a dinner date with Prabha. Who knows how else he 'treats' his suicide bombers before they go on their missions! :-))))))

And maybe something 'xxxtra' as well! Prabha gets pretty lonely down in that dark bunker. After all, a man can't remain celibate for long! ;)
