Vakarai: Heavy shelling turns back food convoy
Wednesday, 29 November 2006 - 2:50 AM SL Time

A large food convoy which was making its way to Vakarai with ICRC and UN assistance yesterday was forced to postpone its mission after heavy shelling was reported in Kadjuwatte, despite a pledge from the LTTE to cease all attacks in the area to facilitate the humanitarian operation.

More than 115 lorries with food, fuel and medicine were making the trip to rebel controlled areas in Vakarai to assist more than 45,000 displaced persons who have been cut off from much needed supplies as a result of the road linking government and LTTE areas in Vakarai being closed.

Batticaloa Government Agent S. Punyamurthi told the Daily Mirror the food convoy had abandoned its mission and returned to Batticaloa after the military advised the officials to turn back as a security threat still persisted.

Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the LTTE had attacked the Kadjuwatte camp last afternoon despite giving an assurance to cease all attacks but the rebels alleged that troops at the camp had retaliated for rebel firing earlier in the day.

The Ground Operations Commander (GOC) of the Army in the area had suggested that ICRC and UN officials meet the LTTE in Vakarai and obtain a guarantee that attacks will cease, to facilitate the humanitarian operation while the army is also seeking SLMM assistance.

According to the GOC the SLMM had not turned up to facilitate the movement of the aid convoys yesterday but SLMM spokesman Thorfinur Omarsson told the Daily Mirror the ceasefire monitors required clear security guarantees from the military before agreeing to such measures.

The SLMM was however to participate in a meeting with the military and the ICRC last evening to work out a fresh attempt for the humanitarian operation this morning.

The Media Centre for National Security meanwhile said the Security Forces were forced to retaliate to neutralize their fire with the intention of facilitating the convoy to move towards Vakarai. The Tigers during the incident attempted to move their cadres forward with them, firing small arms at the Security Forces defences.

During the retaliations one soldier was reported killed whilst two soldiers received injuries. The troops during the retaliatory attacks recovered a GPMG (Machine Gun) and few small arms.

The attempt by the Tigers to prevent the food being sent to the besieged civilians at Vakarai is purely with the intention of discrediting the government in the eyes of the international community.

Previously Tigers were trumpeting that the Security Forces were not allowing the food items to uncleared areas which fact was today proved wrong with the many international representatives witnessing events on ground.

The ground Military Commanders in the area suggested to the representatives returning today to hold a meeting immediately with the officials of ICRC, SLMM and other organizations to decide an immediate date to send the food convoy.

Further the Security Forces suggested having a neutral element moved to the Tiger held area whilst having a team in the controlled areas to get a guarantee from the Tigers not to initiate shelling and to observe whether the Security Forces were initiating any shelling before the food convoy was moved up.

Brigadier Samarasinghe meanwhile said the LTTE was threatening civilians who attempted to purchase supplies from army welfare stores in Jaffna. Government defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said that arrangements were still being made to send some 4,000 tons of supplies to Jaffna along the A9 route as a one-off measure.

Send some Kfirs, to take care of that hitch! We got to match or exceed the intensity of terror of LTTE.

Can you think of the consequences if we target to achieve lower grades than LTTE?

Guys... think about what I say... LTTE terrorism is opportunity to become a country like Germany, Israel, Japan etc...

And we have lot of Stupid We Tamils... to be exploited for testing our weapon systems... stealth techniques etc...

We Tamils are the guinea pigs!

How lucky we are?

Its funny.. all those civilians in Jaffna starving to death.
And not many of them think of actually leaving Jaffna and coming down to areas further south to receive the aid the govt wants to give them.
What's holding them back? Fears that the army will loot their houses?? Fears that they might be shot by the military??? Fear that they might miss the latest episode of 'Kopi Kaday'???

Here we go again, now why would ltte want to do such a thing? I thought only Government organs are responsible for this sort of show downs but it seems even the ltte center also doesn't know what it's periphery doing, nothing different from that neuro-motor disorder patient. In the end as we all know we all are Sri Lankans, what is the big difference Tamils or Sinhalese, so nothing to be amazed about.

Why is SLMM confined to LTTE areas? They are now acting as LTTE reps. Govt should address this quickly.
