Civilians flood from Vakarai; says more on their way; stuck in jungles

BATTICALOA: Forty civilians escaping from the tiger`s grip in VAKARAI in BATTICALOA district arrived in KIRIAMICHCHI, an area South West of VAKARAI around 7.40 a.m. today (26) and revealed that there are around fifty to sixty civilians escaped from the tiger siege at VAKARAI area and on their way in jungles to the Security Forces` controlled areas.

The escapees included seventeen males, seventeen females, three infants and three kids. The elders amongst them said the Security Forces that those civilians in the jungles may arrive in the controlled areas today or tomorrow.

The civilians arriving today confirmed the atrocities committed by the tigers at them to prevent them move to cleared areas as disclosed by those thirty one civilians who arrived yesterday.

The escapees were provided with breakfast by the Soldiers at the MANKERNI detachment and were issued with forty-eight hours dry ration packets before they were moved to the IDPs` camp at ALANKULAM, an area close by MANKERNI.

Army provided transport for the innocents to move to the IDPs` camp from MANKERNI detachment.

The Grama Sevaka (Government Agent at the village level) of the area came in to receive them and to look in to their sanitation requirements.

The Army medical unit in the area treated the infants who were in a very bad health condition due to excessive travelling in very bad weather conditions.

More fifteen civilians from five families arrived at 12.05 p.m. today (26) and they were being received at the time this report is published.
