Thousands of people protest Sri Lankan president`s visit to India

Thousands of Tamils rallied in southern India on Sunday to oppose a visit by the Sri Lankan president and blamed him for the killing of thousands of minority Tamils in the war-battered nation, a news report said.
They also accused Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse of depriving Tamils of food and other necessities in the rebel-controlled territories in Sri Lanka`s north and east, the Press Trust of India news agency said.
Rajapakse arrived in the Indian capital on Saturday and is currently visiting the northern Indian town of Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh state.
He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday and discuss the latest situation in the island nation.
On Sunday, Rajapakse repeated his demand asking India to conduct joint patrols with Sri Lanka of the narrow Palk Straits which divides the two countries to prevent cross-border terrorism.
`We want joint patrolling with India in the sea because not only arms are being smuggled into our country but drugs are also coming,` PTI quoted Rajapakse as saying after laying the foundation stone of an Indo-Sri Lankan Human Rights Center in Dehradun, nearly 250 kilometers (150 miles) northeast of New Delhi.
`If Tigers get stronger, that will be a threat not only to Sri Lanka but also to the world,` Rajapakse said.
A 2002 cease-fire accord between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE had reduced the violence for some time, but since last December more than 3,200 fighters and civilians have been killed in escalating airstrikes, mine attacks, assassinations and heavy arms fire.
The political groups which participated in Sunday`s protest meetings in Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, and various district headquarters included the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Dalit Panthers of India, the Tamil Nationalist Movement and the Tamil Nadu Nationalist Congress party, PTI said.
India`s Tamil Nadu state is home to nearly 56 million Tamils, many with close family ties to ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.
India has been reluctant to become too involved in Sri Lanka after a disastrous military intervention in the 1980s resulted in former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi`s assassination by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber.
The Tigers have been battling the government for over 20 years for a separate state for the island nation`s 3.2 million ethnic Tamils who suffered decades of discrimination by the majority Sinhalese.

MDMK opposes military pact with Sri Lanka
New Delhi, Nov 26: Opposing Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse's visit to India, the MDMK today said New Delhi should not have any defence pact with the island nation or agree to joint patrolling of the maritime boundary of the two countries.
MDMK leader Vaiko made this clear to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee when he met him here this morning.
'The Sri Lankan President is cunningly trying to make a trap to get India's naval assistance for their military offensive (against the LTTE). India should totally reject such a proposal if it is placed by Sri Lanka,' Vaiko told a press conference here.
Tamil Nadu politics heats up as Rajapakse begins India tour
Chennai, Nov 26 (ANI): As Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse started his visit to the country on Sunday, political activities in Tamil Nadu geared up pace, with political parties adamantly opposing any military alliance between New Delhi and Colombo.
Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) leader Thirumavalavan, who was on a day-long hunger strike yesterday in the state Capital against the red-carpet reception to Rajapakse, is more vocal and bitterly anti-Colombo.
Thirumavalavan has urged the Centre to pressurise the visiting President to open the A-9 National Highway in Sri Lanka and send food materials through the International Red Cross and not through the Sri Lankan Government:
'There is no change in the Indian Government's attitude even after stiff opposition and the mood of the Tamils in Tamil Nadu,' he charged.
Vaiko's MDMK and S. Ramadoss' PMK, both members of ruling UPA coalition at the Centre, have threatened street protests against the visit to oppose the killing of innocent Tamils in military offensives in the island nation.
The mayors of Chennai, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Salem of the DMK as well as the Mayors' of Congress from Tiruchi and Coimbatore boycotted the Asian Mayors' meet going on in Dehradun, which was inaugurated by Rajapakse earlier this morning.
Rajapakse had faced somewhat similar protest during his last visit to India in December 2005, when he wanted to have talks with then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalaitha, which was refused by the latter.

US Tamil expatriates condemn GOSL
By Mendaka Abeysekera in New York
The Sri Lankan Tamil expatriates living in the United States, have urged the international community to intervene in Sri Lankan peace process and condemn what they call the ?brutal, inhuman actions of the Sri Lankan government.?
Tamil organizations in the US issued a joint press release last week calling upon the international community to impose a moratorium on military assistance to the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and take tough action against the Vakarai massacre.
Association of Tamil Americans, Illankai Tamil Sangam ? California, Illankai Tamil Sangam ? Florida, Illankai Tamil Sangam ? USA ,Ilankai Tamil Sangam- Houston, Texas, Ohio Tamil Association , Tamil Refugees Rehabilitation Organization , California Tamil Youth Organization - USA ,Tamil Welfare and Human Rights Committee ? District of Columbia, World Tamil Women Organization ? USA and World Tamil Coordinating Committee ? USA, issued this joint press release.
They expressed condemnation over killing of at least 65 internally displaced people (IDPs) who were seeking shelter in a school in Vakarai.
Tamil organizations stated that they are also saddened by the international community?s lack of moral courage to condemn these brutal and inhuman actions of the Sri Lankan government.
They also urged the co-chairs of the peace process to explore modalities that will allow the peoples on the island of Sri Lanka to live with dignity, to determine their political and economic future without interference, and to ensure regional security.
The Nation learns that Sri Lankan Tamil expatriate groups try to pressure the US authorities to take bold action against the government of Sri Lanka, through newly elected Democratic Congressmen like Danny K. Davis, who visited the LTTE?s Political Headquarters in Kilinochchi and met LTTE leaders in April 2005.
A significant number of Democratic party politician?s have been openly supporting for Sri Lankan Tamil rights and demands.
At last mid term elections, anti LTTE Sri Lankans failed to unseat pro LTTE Congressman Danny K. Davis, the Democratic Congressman from Illinois but they were jubilant on their strong supporter, New York Congressman Vito Fossella?s success.
Congressman Danny K. Davis, who visited the LTTE?s Political Headquarters in Kilinochchi and met LTTE leaders in April 2005, won his Illinois 7th District seat by a comfortable margin.
Comparing to year 2004, the last election results, Danny
K. Davis, the Democratic Congressman failed to increase his vote bank and came down by 90,000 odd votes.

There are no specific reasons why they shouldn't protest at visiting President of Sri Lanka.Protesting in civilized manner is democracy instead of violence by terrorism.
But the difference is, President of Sri Lanka represents citizens of Sri Lanka and not Non Lankan Tamils descending from Tamil Nadu fighting for a homeland abroad from their home land (Tamil Nadu) with 65 millions of oppressed Tamils. He is concerned about economy and security of the country and well being of it's citizens. He can not be held responsible for killings and human rights violations by Tamil Terrorists. |
