Govt. asks SLMM to facilitate one off supplies to Jaffna via A9
Saturday, 25 November 2006 - 3:53 AM SL Time

The government has requested the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission to facilitate moves to send urgent food supplies to Jaffna along the A9 route via rebel controlled Kilinochchi as a one off measure to address the humanitarian crisis in the peninsula.

SLMM spokesman Thorfinnur Omarsson told the Daily Mirror the request was made at a routine meeting between the ceasefire monitors and the government peace secretariat yesterday.

Mr. Omarsson says the SLMM liaison officer in Kilinochchi was in touch with the LTTE over the issue and technicalities were now being worked out on how the process could be taken forward although a date to carry out the operation was yet to be finalised.

Meanwhile an SLMM attempt to re-visit Pooneryn, which was earlier proposed by the government to be used as an alternate land route to Jaffna, was abandoned this week after SCOPP failed to give security guarantees to the cease fire monitors.

Following a directive from President Mahinda Rajapaksa the Commissioner General of Essential Services has started making arrangements to transport essential goods to the Jaffna Peninsula along the A-9 highway with hundreds of lorry owners being approached to assist the one off operation.

The LTTE has not shown any favourable response to the government moves to open the Muhamalai crossing point as a one off measure insisting instead on the need to re-open the highway permanently, a move the government refuses to agree on owing to security concerns.

The Muhamalai crossing point was closed by the government following heavy fighting that erupted between troops and the LTTE which resulted in heavy damages to the infrastructure setup to assist the movement of civilians and aid convoys heading for Jaffna.

A government proposal to open an alternate land route to Jaffna via LTTE controlled Pooneryn was rejected by the LTTE who claimed damages to the alternate route including the Sangupitty jetty as a result of aerial bombings will take several months to repair.

The co-chairs to the Tokyo donor conference this week welcomed government moves to send supplies to Jaffna as a one off measure but at the same time stressed on the importance of ensuring all access modes for humanitarian means are kept open.

This is farcical.

How much can they transport in one convoy to feed 600,000 people?

Mahinda is playing silly games with the lives of the tamil people of Jaffna.

I think Mahinda is a puppet of all the extremes, he has no voice of his own; he is like a puppet on a string.

BOTH.....VP and MR do not have their own voices.....BECAUSE they are MARRIED:):):):)
They are singing to their rspective Wives...........

Every time you look at me
I,m as helpless as can be
I become a puppet on a string
You can do most anything to me

All you do is touch my hand
And your wish is my command
I become a puppet on a string
You can do most anything to me..............

Even the anti_tamil the Island printed
The people in the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts, all citizens of Sri Lanka, have been experiencing immense hardship with a shortage of everything. Despite the rhetoric and spin, essential items were simply not getting there and there was no way to get them across other than by re-opening the A-9.
TYhe situation must be much worse than hitheto described.

Govt. asks SLMM to facilitate one off supplies to Jaffna via A9

why one off supplies through A9?
why cant the govt to continue with the sea route that they were comfortable with?

hope ltte reject the call. if the ltte agreed to the one off supplies through the A9, the future talks if ever there to be one may not take place!

the ltte did call for the opening of the A9 during Geneva11 and the govt rejected it.

the time dragging exercise of govt is at the highest, it is time the ltte make or break now!
