Rise and fall of Tony Blair.
Friday, 24 November 2006 - 2:22 AM SL Time

After the dissapointing defeat of the Labour Party in the 1992 general election at the hands of the Tory Party, then party leader Niel Kennock resigned.John Smith became the leader of the Labour Party, with the full support of the party. He was very popular not only in the party but also in the country. After 18 years of Tory rule, rather misrule, people of Birtain wanted a change.Labour Party was on its way to take over the govt. But sadly John Smith died suddenly of heart attack. That was a great blow to the party and its supporters.
At that time Tony Blair and Gorden Brown were rising stars in the party and in the country. And they were thick pals as well.Either of them could have become the leader of the party. They didn`t want a contest among them for the party leadership. So,there was a `gentlemen agreement` that Tony will become the party leader and if they come to power, the Prime minister. And it was expected that at some point ,Tony will give way to Gorden. But the power corrupts people and Tony Blair wasn`t an exception.Even after three election victories and all most ten years as PM ,he was reluctant to relinquish power, and was dragging his feet.
During his ten years in power he had ditched several fundemental policies of the Labour Party and made it a MarkII Tory Party.Because of it he had lost the support of the party members and the country. The Labour party also suffered as a result of Tony Blair`s move towards the right.Lot of party members quit party. When Tony Blair came to power in 1997,the Labour party had 400,000 members. Now it is down to 200,000.Tradional party members , supporters and voters deserted the party. So the remaining party members of th party wanted him to go,before he causes irreparable damage to the party. So came his fall.
