My gut feeling is that A-380 will not leave the ground.It has got lot of technical problem,particularly the electrics,which they are unable to sort out.

Kula,

I am talking about the roads beyond Matara! Simply the best roads in Sri Lanka. Such smooth roads tempt me to go so fast, I almost crashed with an incomming van!

Those are usually several lanes wider one direction!

I believe the airport project is good for Sri Lanka. Not only that, any infrastructure project is good for our country. I believe one very big factor in Ranil's defeat last time was, he stopped all infrastructure projects as soon as he bacame the PM. Lots of people lost their jobs and thousands of kms of roads ruined!!

I think that A380 project would finally take-off but it may not be a viable venture in the long run.

I belive one aircraft is on its worldwide test flight and was in Singapore yesterday and left for Tokyo. It will be certified this December. But whether they will be able to sell enough aircraft to make the project profitable is anybody's guess.

However, A380 coming to Sri Lanka in 2010 is a pipe-dream..

it is true that infrastructure projects are good for the country as it would increase Economic activity if it can increase productivity thus giving a return on investement.

However, I do not see any return on investement(ROI) or increase in Econoimc activity as a result of this particular airport project other than during the building phase. May be who cares after that???

Some people say it will be a good alternative airport to Chennai.

However, how often aircraft are diverted to Chennai from Colombo???

How many times a year we close Colombo airport due to whatever reason???

What is the reason for any aircarft to land at Weerawila???

Who will grant a loan to build another airport when clearly there is no ROI and the existing airport is less than 200 Km away???

When you look at the rate people wanted to get out of srilanka I gather you need three or more airports to accomodate them.

Why wasnt I surprised with your stand on the whole project?Insfrastructure projects are good for the country indeed. But definitely not an airport with a price tag of US$ 125.

Althought the justification for the second airport is rather weak, I did find one point to be important. The fact that we need a emergency runway. Building an airport in an area with no economic base and capable workforce is not the solution to this problem. Look at how countries like Singapore use their limited resources (land) to solve this problem. They simply have a freeway running next to the airport and in the case that a emergency runway is needed, the light pole's on the freeway go down converting the freeway into a runway. I was highly fascitnated as to how they use what little they have for the benefit of the country. Maybe thats why singapore is far ahead of us today. Now the limited resource in Sri Lanka being money, I dont think this how it should be used. How much money do you think Sri Lankan Airlines spend on transporting a capable workforce from Colombo to Katunayake? How much do you think they would have to spend in the case that they had to transport them to Weerawila? How many people would fly out from or into Weerawila as opposed to Katunayake? Under the current situation, this is not the best use of our money or any foreign aid we get. Like Kiwi said, this is another way to boost MR's ego and to get an airport named after him.

In my opinion one of the most ridiculous decision this Government has taken since Rajapaksa is piloting the country.

a) there is not enough pocket money available
b) there are so many urgent things to be done lucking funding
c) to my knowledge Weerawila and its region is not exactly the place with the highest density of population / business activities outside Colombo

Whereas it is certainly true that Katunayake Airport?s development potential is limited, wouldn?t it make more sense to develop another existing airport costing far less money and serving a larger population? How about Anuradhapura for example?

Multiple run-ways at one airport (BIA Katunayake) simply will not do. It may not be known to many, that in the current situation, our diversionary airport - in case Katunayake is un-available for what-ever reason - is in S India. We are thus dependent on DGCA India approving any flight which may have security stores on board (say a cargo a'cft carrying explosive stores for SL military), and liable to be diverted to a S Indian airport. Our dependence on India, on this count alone, severely compromises our sovereignity.

We do need another diversionary airfield (capable of taking big-jets), to supplement BIA Katunayake - now. (We have had this need for many years, and those in power all this time, could not focus on this issue).

I have heard/seen of planes landing on freeways but they actually designed it that way. smart!! is this the Changi airport which was partially built on reclaimed land.
