Mageychintana,
I do not believe that this project will be anything like what they say. A380 story is a crap they are feeding to make people feel better.
At best I think they would do some improvement to the existing facility or the foundation stone would collect carbon like many other stones all around the country. Perhaps future historians will be able to carbon date the Stone to establish the period of the stone.
I do not think the opposition will make much noise at the Parliament as it would be portrayed as opposing Southern development even though they know that this is a red herring.
Politics my friend, politics!

Kula,
Definitely. I don't believe any of the justification put forward for this project as well. To me its a huge waste of money under the current situation the country is in.
I guess you are right about the opposition challenging this move. The government would fire back and spread propoganda about how the opposition is acting as a barrier to development. In which case, such a move by the opposition would actually reduce its popularity rather than increase it because people fail to see through the lies to realise that what the opposition did is actually for the benifit of the country.
I guess this is because the lack of uniformity in the level of education of developing nations. People just don't have the capacity to see through things. |

MaKaSo, who gave you the infor that K'nayaka handles 120 flights a day? No more than 25 flights take off and land at K'nayaka. Sit there for one day and you will realise the true fact.
The Weerawila airport is just an ego boost for MR as the Bandas' have an Int airport named after them Jaya had a city named after him the uda gams and clock towers are there to remind everyone of RP and the Mahinda Rajapakse Int Airport at Weerawila will remind everyone of MR. SOme day the Weerawila Intl Airport will be another huge abandoned complex like the Kosgama Plywood Factory as with the immense travel warnings to sri lanka flashed around the world tourists arrivals will continue to drop and not increase. This is a huge waste at public expense as MR has got his priorities mixed. Still people languish in tents in tsunami camps some having just 3 toilets for 400 people. Why waste Rs.120 billion (or some similar exhorbitant amount) on an airport when houses for many could have been constructed with that money. Is this airport the need of the country at the moment? Hi kiwi,
Where have you been all these days and nice to have you back???
When I read this article I recollected what you said some time in March and quoted in my post. may be its useful to quote you from your earlier post:
This would definitely benefit the farmers far down south as when they travel on holiday to the US or UK or any where they will not have to travel all the way to K'nayake!!
The farmers would also be able to use the airstrips for their Cessnas etc etc which they would be using for spraying crops etc etc and of course they could use the hangers to park their private Cessnas or lear jets etc etc. Indeed good idea by the government to benefit the farmers. That is what the farmers were missing all these years.
As you rightly said it will be 'Mihindu Airlines' operating exclusively to Rajapakse International Airport. Bravo!!!

Kula, Yes its nce to be back after a hectic time! You are correct mate in refering to my previous posting (which was of course is sprinkled with sarcasm!).
The turn out at the inauguration ceremony to commence work was testimony to the fact as to how the farming community of Weerawila welcomes the air port project.
Any way soon we may be seeing Mihindu Airlines landing the A380 at the Mahinda Rajapakse International Airport at Weerawila but one passenger who will definitely avoid the airport is our own CBK who is now called 'Kondey Nisa Nice' (because of her new hair style). The new name rhymes with 'Condolessa Rice' of the US! Edited By - kiwikanga - 20 Nov 2006 08:15:51 GMT |

Kulakottan,
You were talking about upgrading roads.
I have been to Down south few months ago and travelled deep inside, up to Mulkirigala Raja maha viharaya.
The roads are the best in Sri Lanka!! Much better than Colombo Katunayake road or Colombo Kandy road.
Whatever said and done, Mahinda has really improved the road system in southern Sri Lanka.
Cheers

Pera,
Happy to hear that!
However, it still takes more than 5 hours to reach the South becuase the road may be good in terms of quality but not wide enough to accommadate the traffic.
Still much more to be done than building a second airport at a cost of US$125 million when the existing aiprort is still not fully utilized..
OR
May be another 'Goat Trick' offered by Mahinda for his Ruhuna people
Cheers

Pera, MR doing what ever he can for the south (mainly the Hambantota District) of Sri Lanka is no surprise as he is from that area. This just goes to show that after doing for himself and his family he now does for his people in his area. What he has seemingly forgotten is that Hambantota is just 1 district of the 22 districts in the country. He also seemingly has forgotten that the Hambantota District is not the whole of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is full of greedy power hungry self centred politicians seeking power only to feather their own nests at the expense of the foolish masses while also trying to boost their personnel egos, and MR is just another one of these good for nothing parasites the country is now plagued with.
