Foundation laid for Sri Lanka`s second international airport
Monday, 20 November 2006 - 1:47 AM SL Time

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today laid the foundation for the construction of the country`s second international airport in the deep south area of Weerawila.

The President, addressing the ceremony, said his government has no plans ?to let the country be divided in fear of terrorism or any other force?. He said the government has not underestimated the efforts of the war heroes.

The President also said the government would not let the Eastern Muslims be the victims of the LTTE. The Tigers have now been restricted to several villages in the Eastern Province, he said. Pointing out the need to clearly identify the distance between the Tamil people and the Tigers, the President said there were thousands of people to follow Tamil leaders such as Lakshman Kadirgamar, Amirthalingam, Anandasangaree and Douglas Devananda.

The airport that is expected to be completed by 2008 will have modern facilities that are capable of handling the largest of airplanes such as the A-380. It will have a 4000 metre runway, facilities to handle 10 aircrafts at a time, a state-of-the-art terminal and cargo handling facilities.

The Sri Lanka government intends to develop the southern Hambantota district through tourism and other economic sectors by constructing this airport and the proposed Hambantota Harbour.

During tsunami, we felt the need of two air ports and it is important to have two international air ports, but one of them should have at least two runways and act as the hub while other playing support role for emergencies. I don not know much details about Katunayake air port (avaialable space for another runway, hangers etc, but I guess its the best to use as the main airport. Anybody knows their overall business model ?

Some facts about Katunayaka airport
Even after development by several stages, the extent of Katunayake airport is only 490 hectares. Despite the fact that it is well equipped with modern facilities, the number of planes which could be accommodated at a time is limited to 25.
The number of planes operated per day from this airport is approximately 120. Those are the salient factors which led to the decision of constructing the second international airport at Weerawila.

The new airport will be smaller and more high tech. It can handle 10 planes at a time.

New air port should be in the vicinity of Katunayake air port to be a successful business venture. Specially that will be a helpful for transit passengers and business community. The ideal location should be somewhere around Puttalam making Colombo-Kurunegala-mannar as a future business/industrial triangle. Further, in future mannar will be an important city linking lands of both Sri lanka and India. Hence this will further qualify to have the second airport some where around puttlam.

politicians must not give priority to their vote banks in solving problems of national interest.
