LTTE rejects A9 alternative
Thursday, 9 November 2006 - 4:36 AM SL Time

The LTTE sasaid yesterday the government proposal to open Pooneryn via Kilinochchi to reach Jaffna as an alternate to Muhamalai was not a viable option as the infrastructure in the area was heavily damaged and would take several months to repair.

LTTE peace secretariat chief S. Pulithevan told the Daily Mirror, the jetty in Sangupity, the crossing point to reach Jaffna, was heavily damaged following recent military shelling and aerial bombings which the government had said was to neutralise rebel threats to the Palaly army base.

The government yesterday, via SLMM head Lars Johan Sølvberg, proposed to the LTTE to open Pooneryn from Kilinochchi as an alternate route for civilian movement to Jaffna thus bypassing the highly contentious Muhamalai entry exit point on the A9 highway.

?The SLMM head met us and gave the government proposal. We said it was not feasible because it is heavily damaged from persistent aerial bombing by the air force. The Sangupity jetty is also heavily damaged and will take at least two years to repair,? Mr. Pulithevan told the Daily Mirror.

He said the SLMM head, who visited Kilinochchi yesterday with the government proposal, was taken to Pooneryn to see first hand the damage only to be greeted by military shelling forcing him to retreat and seek shelter.

?The SLMM head checked with the government before heading to the area and yet the area was attacked. The SLMM head and I took cover in a bunker. We contacted the government peace secretariat at that point and asked it to halt the attacks but to no avail,? Mr. Pulithevan said.

Government defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwelle meanwhile said the government proposed the new route as a humanitarian gesture and to help break the deadlock in the peace process with the LTTE insisting on the re-opening of the Muhamalai entry exit point as a precondition for future talks.

Minister Rambukwelle said the closure of the Muhamalai entry exit point was to do with national security. He said the LTTE extorted heavy taxes from civilians crossing into rebel areas as well as forcefully recruited youth from Jaffna to serve the `Peoples force`, as offshoot of the LTTE.

Asked if there was a guarantee such activities would not take place by opening the alternate route which also runs through rebel areas the Minister admitted it would not be under total control but the government would monitor such activities and reconsider the fresh route if it posed a threat to national security.

?We will not take any measure which can pose a threat to national security. National security comes first. The SLMM has said the closure of the A9 at Muhamalai is a violation of the CFA. If increasing the number of violations of the ceasefire agreement is what it takes to safeguard national security so be it,? Minister Rambukwelle told the media yesterday.

He said a TNA MP who had met him this week admitted the closure of the Muhamalai crossing point was a setback to the LTTE as they had suffered immensely by the drop in the collection of tax money which it used to carry out its terror campaign against the security forces.

Minister Rambukwelle said the government continued to address the humanitarian concerns of Jaffna by increasing supplies to the peninsula with the purchase of 4 new vessels and the possibility of chartering 2 more ships.

He said negotiations were continuing with Indian traders in Tamil Nadu to ship supplies directly to Jaffna but added there were reports that the LTTE had discreetly warned the Indians against agreeing to such operations.

What do you expect from someone who rejects his or her own life and the lives of everyone around? Any solution is a problem for sorryTTE. Their survival depends on problems.

Nepal's top rebel leader, Prachanda, has declared an end to violence after 10 years of armed insurgency.
The announcement came after a peace deal which will see the Maoists join an interim government within a month.

The accord has been welcomed by Nepal's politicians, as well as by giant neighbour India and the US and UK.

THE POINT HERE IS THAT THE PARTIES TO THE CONFLICT IN NEPAL REACHED AN AGREENMENT WHILE THE REBELS HOLDING ONTO THE WEAPONS!

it reminds me the ltte's proposal ISGA IN 2002!

AGAIN, if the parties to the conflict in lanka are genuine the A9 should not be an issue! the gotvt should open it straight away without any conditions.

If LTTE take down couple of bridges from Dhiwella to Galle , the government would in a position to open the A-9 , other wise LTTE should STOP talking to the government , its not worth or the POWER plant is the best choice , the GoSL should come down from the State terrorist to democratic government ,GoSL should be punished for the crimes against humanity , if not the IC , EU , US ,etc, etc should make it to happen than just giving kinda lip service, if not leave the tamils alone let them find the solution .

It's dangerous and hazadous.

Pooneryn route involves driving through damaged hills and valleys and crossing the lagoon. How can people walk through water and use dilapilated boats to cross the lagoon? This is another attempt to drown Tamil mothers and children as it happens in Palk Strait.

If LTTE is really concerend about Jaffna Tamils, why LTTE can not agree to open alternative route when GOSL does not want to open A -9.

In case if you don't know, Thambi, There are a lot of 'alternate roads' from Dehiwala -- Galle.
( Ask an LTTE operative who smuggle arms to Karandeniya, he will tell you all )

LTTE is dying without having Rs : 300 million collection per month from A-9, soon the LTTE carders will start leaving :
No Money : No honey,
This is why LTTE is crying for A-9, ooooops. Won't happen..

There is an altered picture of Thamilchelvam and Nimal Siripala shaking hand. In that

Thamil Chelvam : Ane Machan Arapanko A-9
Nimal Siripala : Hariyanko anith paththa...
