Saturday, 4 November 2006 - 5:00 AM SL Time

The Government has decide to conduct a special O/L examination this year for the displaced Sri Lankan children, now living in refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, the Education Ministry said yesterday.

During the year, nearly 15,000 displaced people fled Sri Lanka for Tamil Nadu and over 27 percent of them are less than 16 years of age, the Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai P.M. Amzar said.

Over 100 displaced children were preparing to sit for the GCE O/L examination this year.

The Deputy High Commissioner had attended the recent meeting of the foreign missions of Sri Lanka summoned by the President and had requested the Secretary to the Ministry of Education and the Commissioner General of Examinations to conduct the O/L examination in Tamil Nadu.

The education of the children, now in Tamil Nadu had been disrupted for the past several months and steps were taken to send seven teachers to enable the children resume their education.

The teachers were selected from the Northern and Eastern provinces and they left the island on the November 1 for Chennai. In agreement with the government of Tamil Nadu, the classes for the displaced children will be conducted at Ramanathapuram.

The text books that are necessary for these children will be sent by the Foreign Ministry.

The O/L examination is scheduled to be held in December and three officers from the Examinations Department will be in Chennai during that period, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education Jayasinghe said. The funds necessary to conduct the exams in Chennai are provided by the UNHCR, he added.
