Folks:
Tiger chief Velupillai Prabhakaran turns 52 on November 26. His birthday coincides with the rebels' 'Heroes' Week,' which commemorates the 18,500-plus guerrillas killed in the three-decade-old conflict for a separate homeland for the Tamil minority in the Sinhalese-majority nation.

Abductions and disappearances continue in Sri Lanka despite government efforts
Friday, November 3, 2006, 14:06 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's human rights activists expressed desperation over the unending disappearances and abductions reported in the country despite the government assurances and the intervention of the international human rights bodies. Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission is now investigating five abductions that took place within three days of this month.

Civil Monitoring Committee (CMC) Chairman Sirithunga Jayasooriya said that there have been 54 abductions in Colombo city alone and of these, 36 are missing, 09 have been killed and 09 have been released after alleged payment of ransom money.

Except a few Sinhala and Muslim persons almost all the affected persons are Tamils. Sivanandan, a leading Colombo activist of the government ally Upcountry People's Front is also among the disappeared.

Around 500 parents, relatives and friends of the disappeared persons staged a protest in front of the Colombo Fort railway station on Wednesday asking the government to mediate immediately to stop the disappearances and abductions.
