TC:

That is because Ranil was not the president but the PM!
He did not have the defense portfolio
CBK had it
He bought it 2 times to the floor and both times it was vetoed or outsted.

That is because Ranil was not the president but the PM!

thats why i say the constitution has got to be changed. executive presi abolished for anythign +ve to happen

rather have both the Pm and PRESI from one party.

one cant just hide behind this argument for ever. whats the point of signing something if you dont have to power to implemt it. This is exactly our problem.

is the southern parties UNITED now to push fwd these. Personally i think its all a big smokescreen for the follwing reasons.

RW knows cadidates are jumping ship. why not sign a MOU and stop that. MR could go throuhg withhis Chintana so needed something else for the folks to swallow.

Co chairs might buy into this and relaese funds

Starving Sri Lankan fishermen in North Colombo beg to go back to industry

November 03: Fishing community in the North Colombo area of Sri Lanka who lost their livelihood due to the strict fishing ban around the Colombo harbour were seen breaking the iron parts of abandoned ship hulks near the Modara fishing harbour situated adjacent to the Colombo Port. They were going to sell the cast iron to junk yards to earn some money to keep the family fires burning.

'We are starving,' one woman of the fishing community of Modara said in an angry tone. Her children stayed at home without attending schools. 'We didn't have rice to eat for days now,' she said.

M. Wijendra, Secretary of the All Lanka Fishing Community Trade Union said that the discussion the union had with the Minister of Fisheries yesterday was not fruitful. 'We are not against the security measures. We only request the freedom to engage in our livelihood,' he said.

'We need no compensations,' another angry fisherman said. 'Once they promised to compensate the fisher folk who lost livelihood due to the sand mining in Pamunugama area. But the compensation allowance was given only once. Therefore we don't want to beg for compensations. We request only an opportunity to engage in our traditional industry.'

Following the rebel susicide attack on Galle harbour, On 24th October Sri Lanka Navy issuing a special announcement totally banned all dinghies and other small boats in the coastal zone from Wellawatta, south of Colombo to Uswetakeyiyawa, north of Colombo.

Around 2000 Sri Lankan fisher families that live north of Colombo have lost livelihood due to these restrictions, says the Secretary Vijendra.

Around 800 boats in four fishing villages, namely Modera, Mattakkuliya, Aluth Mawatha and Lunupokuna, cannot engage in the industry as a result of the restrictions.

However the trawlers are allowed to arrive and leave this restricted area between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sri Lanka Navy advises the fishermen to strictly follow the regulations.

Thorough security measures are followed in this zone by Sri Lanka Navy due to threats of attacks to the Colombo harbour from Tamil Tiger rebels.
